We had to do an emergency load (spilled something all over the bed covers) and had just about 2 hours left before we had to check out of our campsite. The facility available at the site had 3 washers and 3 dryers. All the washers were being used so I had to wait. After a while someone came in and moved all their wet laundry to the 3 dryers and left the area.
One of the dryers stopped before the others and I waited for the person to come back and take his things out of the dryer(my wash load was ready, I only had one). The person who was doing laundry first did see me and knew I was waiting to use the machines too. It took about 45 minutes to run the wash and I still needed to dry my things but I had to wait for the person to come back and remove his clothes and I had to check out on time or be charged another day.
What does one do when this happens? I dont use laundry mats often but when I have I did notice that if someone leaves their things unattended and their machine is needed someone will take the items out of the washer/dryer and place them in the available baskets. Is that a reasonable thing to do? How long should one wait for someone to return for their things?
Thanks for your help.

There is always the chance of the person taking offense, but every laundry I have been in states to not leave laundry unattended, besides it's just rude. I have been in your situation a time or two, and after five minutes or so will just take it out. I do not fold strangers underwear though.
It is awkward feeling though. But hey...

Wellconsidering that whoever was using the dryer was gone before you were loading the washer - ?
Most folks check their loads if they leave, every 30 minutes or so as there isn't that much time on a quarter. Moving their load to a basket or cart is acceptable, as folks aren't supposed to be machine hogs, or run off and leave their loads.

Back when laundromats were attended, it was customary for the attendant to move things from a dryer to a basket, if the customer didn't hang around to do the job. Your doing so would be within the realm of what routinely happens at a laundromat today, but someone else who is not familiar with this etiquette might be upset that you did.
Someone who goes from three washers to three dryers, then walks away, probably doesn't understand the etiquette, nor how dryers work. Not only is that behavior selfish, it is a waste of coins, because a typical laundromat dryer can handle two or three washer loads, with a single run.

Kimette.. You're obviously a classy individual because you took the time to come here and ask for advice. The world needs more people like you.
I've not been in the situation but it would seem to me that if you can't be bothered to keep an eye on your laundry than you should risk having it removed from the machine upon completion in your absence.

Hi
We've experienced this on plenty of occasions. Typically we will give the person ten minuets to come in and remove their stuff after that it goes on top of a folding table and they can deal with it when they come back. Vacations are too short to be tied up waiting in a laundromat for someone who is inconsiderate.

I believe you would be with in your "rights" to remove the clothes from the dryer. Nothing wrong or rude about that but leaving clothes in the dryer, unattended, whether or not someone else is waiting... that is not only rude, it is just plain wrong.

The point is that some people are just inconsiderate. When there are only three machines each, it is just plain rude to use them all. It is simply saying to the world, my time is more important than your time! Frankly I wish rv parks would post a list of rules for use of the laundry but few do, and my wife and I have been inconvenienced numerous times by laundry hogs. Fortunately for us it hasn't been as critical as your situation.

Thank you all for your responses. I waited 5 minutes for the man to return and when he didnt I checked outside to see if I could find him. After a couple more minutes I opened the dryer door and saw that there were 3 pairs of jeans inside. I waited a few more minutes then decided that since they were just jeans it would be ok to remove them. I folded them neatly and set them on the other dryer. As I was taking my things out of the washer the man came in and I told him that his load had finished and I had waited over 5 minutes for him to return, I apologized that I couldnt wait so had removed his items but I had folded them neatly and set them on the other dryer for him.
Well he was quite upset with me and yelled at me for about 5 minutes while I stood there with a load of wet laundry in my arms. After 5 minutes he stopped and asked if the dryer had even stopped. I said "of course and I waited over 5 minutes for you so when you didnt return I went looking for you, could not find you so I thought it would be ok to remove your items. I apologize for upsetting you" He went back to telling me how wrong I was for a couple of more minutes then said it was ok for me to put my things in the dryer now.
Then he started small talk with me. I politely answered his questions but then went outside to get some fresh air. I was nearly in tears after all the trouble I got into and I didnt think I had done anything so wrong. I had to check with all of you to see if I had made a major faux pas. I felt terrible that I had done something so offensive. I always try to treat people in the same way that I would like to be treated and I didnt see any harm in removing 3 articles of clothing. If it had been more personal items I surely would not have done so. Thank you all for making me feel better. I wanted to make sure that I never do anything that is considered rude again so now I know that it is in most cases ok .
