When I start my Generac it will not produce power until I shut it down and restart it. Not much of a problem but is this a precursor to a failure of some sort? I do exercise the genset under load about every three weeks.

It sounds like the field flash circuit is not working or the brushes and slip rings are dirty and restricting the field flash current to the rotor.

Could a low battery cause this problem?

If the unit cranks at or near normal speed, the battery is OK and probably not a factor in the "no initial voltage buildup" problem.

Jim, is this a common problem and will it eventually lead to complete failure or unreliable service?
The genset leaks slightly and produces a very fine oil mist out of the cooling air outlet. Will this oil get into the revolving electrical components? Thanks.

Update. I charged the weak house batteries and the genset now works properly.
