We're shopping, just on the internet so far,

I can't find anything about this on their website.

My truck manual says anything over 2000# needs brakes...

You'd be hard pressed to find a travel trailer that does not come with brakes. Yes, the Jayfeathers have brakes. You will need to buy a brake controller and have it put in on your tow vehicle. When you hook the cord into the 7 pin controller you will be hooking the brakes up to your tow vehicle so to speak. The brake controller brakes the trailer with the truck (in very simplistic terms)

Recommend the Prodigy.

Yes the Jay Feather has brakes. Some of the smaller models (Sport and Ex-Port) can be ordered with surge brakes in place of the electric brakes. I saw a Jay Feather Sport with factory surge brakes.

What is the difference between surge brake and electric brake?

A surge brake consists of a master cylinder mounted on the trailer tongue which is acutated when the tow vehicle hits the brakes and the trailer starts to push on the tow vehicle hitch. This operates the trailer brakes using a hydrolic brake system. There are no connections to the tow vehicle relating to the operation of the brakes (except the brake lights) and there is no brake control necessary in the tow vehicle.

Electric brakes are operated by a brake control in the tow vehicle that is connected to the vehicle brake light circuit, and the good ones also have an inertia sensor which controls the rate of application by sending voltage through the trailer wiring connector to a set of brake drums and shoes that are applied when current is present.

In the past electric brake controls tied into the hydrolic braking system of the tow vehicle to acuate the control, sending more current as the TV brakes are applied more but that is not so commen these days.
