I was just reading up on SP3 this morning. It appears to mostly be a collection of all the past updates which seem to be mostly security related but some improve stability. I will probably update after it has been out for a month or so to make sure there are no significant issues. One good thing is that it does not alter your IE version although it does update either version 6 or 7.

I did a clean install of XP on my daughters desktop after hard drive failure. SP3 was available as a download back then so I installed it instead of going through all the updates since SP2. SP3 presented no problems.

For those who wish to manually update to WIN XP SP3, you can download a full install from MICROSOFT here:

I am going to wait and have them send me the CD when it becomes available. (I didn't see it on the web site when I looked.)

That's one of the reasons I download the full SP3 install, and burn it to a CD for future use should I have to reinstall WIN XP.

I installed Win XP SP3 on two computers today and found no problems. SP3 is big. The download was about 60 MB which was probably compressed. My feeling is that MS Updates and SPs fix problems so I routinely download them. At first I thought that I would already have SP3 since I get MS Updates automatically. What I discovered is that I needed another software download just to reach MS Update. Automatic MS Updates apparently don't trigger the necessary software download to allow the updates. Clicking on MS Update works.
