I agree. You'll spend 2 hours or more each way from Gettysburg into DC.
Cherry Hill is a good stop for hard-walled RV's, but not, IMHO, for pop-ups, tents, and hybrids due to its very close proximity to the Beltway. (It's virtually right beside it!) My wife and I were fine in our Roadtrek, but our son and a cousin in a tent had a really tough time sleeping. The air brakes of the 18-wheelers were very loud. Just my 2 cents worth.
I also vote for Cherry Hill. It's got almost everything going for it. We travel in a TT so the beltway noise is not an issue for us. The belt way noise is also quite a bit less when camping closer towards the entrance. I rarely even have problems sleeping anyway, unless I have really noisy immediate neighbours.
It's clean, nice pools, great proximity to DC, public transportation going right through the cg that goes directly to the subways, ticket sales etc.

Cherry Hill without even thinking about it as we stayed there for one month. The Beltway traffic noise was no problem and we are used to being in the country back home in WI.

Cherry Hill has been our choice for each trip to DC and will be when we go again. I even have their calendar stuck next to my desk. While you are there we would recommend the Spy Museum. You will never trust anything again. It is a private museum and not cheap but it is very good. Our 10+13yr. old Granddaughters didn't want to leave either.
I have stayed in Centerville at Bull Run. It is a wonderful place to stay and very easy to get into the city and it is a third of the price of CHerry hill and much more quiet too. I would stay there without hesitation and you can drive the few miles ot themetro and still go in or you can even drive to the Air and Space Udvar Hazy annex too right next door.

I have not been to this campground (it's only 5 miles away), but I've heard good things. Rambling pines
35 minute trip to Shady Grove Metro Red Line, 25 minute ride to Metro Center.
45 minutes to Gettysburg, 30 Minutes to Baltimore's Inner Harbor, 45 minutes to Harpers Ferry.

We stayed at Pohick Bay in Lorton, VA. It was not far from the Metro station, which is the best way to travel in the city. It is very wooded and not all sites are full hook-up, but it served our needs nicely, and it's a lot less expensive than Cherry Hill. There is a very nice grocery store very close (get directions from the staff). It was great to stop off on our way home from the city to get dinner at the salad bar.
Mount Vernon is just a few miles away.
Enjoy our capital city. It's a wonderful place to visit.
