No, the sky is not falling. Recent reports indicate we are not in a recession. It's all media hype!

DutchmenSport, funny you should mention jobs going overseas. Over two years ago at Christmas time I (and others I worked with) got outsourced to Asia.

The whole media hype thing is blown out of proportion and I'm not buying what they are selling. Having the perspective of being out of a job for over 2 years undergoing reprograming, I'm not negative about current events. I almost thought I was too old for retraining but this is a great opportunity for me to follow my heart and do something I want to do. My only limit is when the Mrs retires I am expected to join her.

Life is too short for wasted energy, take it easy, maybe go camping

What burns my buns is that the whole oil industry in the Middle East was developed by American and British technology. They'd still be sitting on a pile of sand without us.

the only thing I know is I'm retired and on a fixed income and all the prices, property and school taxes, utility prices, food ,fuel ,medical are all out of control and its getting almost impossible to keep up where just a few short years back there was not a problem.theres all kinds of people both working and retired having to loose there homes and property because of it, many are just baring holding on,and people are leaving the state for better places they hope.you can call it what you want but its not good .

As long as our government keep sending jobs, money, and servicemen, overseas, sky will continue to lower IMO.

Well, I do not beleave in the global warming. Well to a point I don't. The Earth will heat and cool over many years. There is no gas shortage , if they would open a few more oil fields. The jobs leaving the US are on the politicians backs. They signed NAFTA into effect. The companies that move over seas are after more profits. Free enterprise. It sucks for the folks with less money such as myself. And in turn almost everyone will feel it. We quit eating out. So there is at least 100 bucks a month gone from the resturant industry. I will be doing less home improvement, (as long as the wife lets me anyway.) The big 3 bit off more than they could chew, flooding the market with the over sized and overpriced SUVs. The media does blow things out of proportion, I sometimes think it is leaked from the government to try and correct other mistakes. We hit 3.85 a gal today. I am counting on 4 to 4.50 a gal for our 4000 mile round trip to the grand canyon. My TT may not move again after that, and if that is the way it ends up so be it. I figure if it gets to bad, and folks quit buying a lot of stuff, including gas, then something will have to break. I do believe we are in a recession. I do not think we ever really recovered from the last big one in 2003 or whenever it was. They try to make it sound like we did. And you hear conflicting reports. Depends on who you listen to. And talking it up does not mean it is any better. What happens on the East coast, and the West coast takes awhile to hit in in KY and IN. By the time we feel the crunch the rest are already through it. This is all my opinion, and it really doesn't matter. But that is the way I see it.

Mostly hype, in some years our economy would be considered robust. We have gotten spoiled over the last 15 years as the economy was on a tear. BTW the earth has been heating and cooling since creation all by itself. It has a built in self regulating design that politicians, some scientists, and leftist types cannot see. Actual data has us cooling the last 12 years.

Well, that's a lot of questions. Depression is a strong word. If you are in your 60's like me, then you know that we are bound to have up and down cycles in the economy and we've come through them before. Actually, the stock market isn't all that low considering all the negatives going on so that's a positive. I am concerned about inflation and gas prices more than I am about the whole economy in general because those 2 things are threatening our long trip/ RV lifestyle which means so much to us in our retirement. I think ending the war and some decrease in gas prices would really help with the economy.
I own a Chevy truck(just as reliable as the many Toyota cars I have owned) but realistically we live in a world market today like it or not and it would very difficult to examine every product and try to avoid foreign.
But, no I don't think the sky is falling; just a little cloudy right now.

I agree with others, the media is all hype thats how they make money. They sensationalize anything that gets them ratings.

So yes they are hyping the current economy. The economy is slowing but it has been going really good so a slow down is not surprising.

Yes they are hyping global warming. We all know the earth goes through cycles. It has been doing this since the beginning of time, More and more scientists are coming forward that agree with this.

I own my own business, I have not really noticed a slow down but I am in computers so that industry hasn't really slowed.

I own 3 American vehicles and one foreign one. I just bought the Honda. I am looking to replace two of the American with two newer American ones.

The cost of fuel is really annoying me. I think this will do some long term damage to the economy. All prices are going to have to go up because of fuel prices and at this point pay has not increased to match the cost of living increases. This is going to be a problem.
