Yep, ignorance. You are blanketly condemning all retreads due to one bad experience fifteen-plus years ago with an obscure and incompetent recapper.
PS--Plenty of new tires have varying diameter.

Those aren't retread rubber you are seeing, thats the steel belt in a modern radial truck tire.
A rookie mistake to assume that.
The rubber from a retread is vulcanized to the rubber in the casing, they do not separate.
You can use a retread on the front steering axle, the old wives tale about not being able to is from the early early early days when they used heat to cure the rubber, they dont do that anymore but the old law is still on the books, but that law only pertained to Buses that carried passengers, not over the road trucks.
This is correct. The steel is the giveaway.

Plenty of new tires have varying diameter? Hmmm, interesting. Maybe the varying diameter was not the cause of the horrible handling of those tires.
I admit that back then I knew very little about tires. But I *do* know, I never had the horrible handling problems with that car (Subaru) or any other car, once I stopped using retread tires. I may well have just got a bad set from a questionable dealer, won't argue that.
BTW, Jarlaxle...You're a fine one to talk about 'blanketly condemning' things. Talk about a case of the pot calling the kettle black, LOL! Remember a certain thread, where your obvious and blatant bias and 'blanket condemnation' ran to the point of being absolutely ludicrous, of a certain kind of vehicle (cough, cough...minivans..cough, cough..).

A while back, my wife bought 4 new tires for her Cherokee. Standing side by side, the diameters varied noticeably (about 3/4" shortest to tallest). The Jeep showed no handling problems, the tires went just over 50K before replacement due to wear. The Hi-Tech caps that replaced them (same size) were much more consistent...one actually balanced with only 1/4 ounce of weight.
Again: I will never use anything else. They are THAT good.

Maybe I shouldn't say this but...........
The F-450 I drive at work has a 12 ply tire on the L.F., and a 14 ply tire on the R.F.
For the first time since I started driving it, it tracks straight down the road.

I hope the original poster has noticed what totally out in left field advise is sometimes given on this board.
Like giving an emphatic NO when the no is not based on anything but urban legend.
Total lack of knowledge on how tires are constructed. The tread is vulcanized/or whatever to the carcass on new tire manufacturing.
The treads laying on the highway are from truck retreads - whaaaaaaaaaat!
If you don't have them real deep pockets, you should not be RVing.
Just think that if someone took all the El Torro popo off this site how informative and consise it would be.
Whoah, then I would not have posted this either
I am really getting cranked up now, I better settle down and enjoy life.
However, I did think the thread was interesting because of some real world comments given on experience gained.

WHAT?!?!? You mean that everything on this forum is not necessarily the truth?!?!
Yeah I picked up on it. I was able to weed through the bogus/urban legend aspect of it and found some really great information. It does seem like every posted question has the potential volatility of politics or religion or dare I say abortion!
None the less it has been interesting, however I am thinking of changing my name from "colorado caravan" to "to broke to RV" nice ring don't ya think?

Methinks that 450 needs the attention of a good front-end mechanic.

Just because one front tire wore out faster than the other is no reason for a snap judgement.
