I'm using trailer life cd 2006 and tryiny to figure out how long (time wise) from Denver to Colombus Ohio. When I use the routing on the cd it says that Denver to Hays Kansas 4+ hrs 368 miles at 75mph. I can't see how this could be so short. What do you think? Give me an idea of travel time please.

If you divide 368 by 75, you will get 4.9 hrs. No one can sustain that kind of speed, however. It would make more sense to figure on 55 mph as an average speed.
368 / 55 = 6.69 hrs.

Totally agree with johnna on this one.
I run the same routing on MS Streets and Maps and got basically the same as you (339.6 miles). When I adjusted the speed back to a realistic speed for towing, I came up with about the same numbers as johnna.

You should have a pretty good idea on what kind of average time you normally make on the Interstate, and use that number. I use about 57.5 and it works for me. I use 55 otherwise or on the US numbered highways and that works pretty close also.

The problem with these planning programs is that they are set (defaulted) to auto/interstate speed and don't take into account an average RV towing speed.

Yes, you need to adjust to your driving speeds.

Kansas Interstate speed limits allow 75 mph most of the way (they allow 80 on the Turnpike) and some of the auto traffic will run 5-10 mph over (part of the Kansas culture, they do the same when the come down into "zero tolerance" Oklahoma, occasionally get burned).

But you aren't going to be running that fast with a RV, not without overheating engines and tires.

We have always figured 50 mile per hour and with stops for fuel and rest stops (short walk) it has always works out for us. 400 miles, 8 hours.

I'm with Bea. We figure 50mph to include traffic & normal stops for the milage we intend to cover each day.

WE just made that trip from Denver to KC and have done it several times. Pulling our fiver we often have stopped at Wahkeeny - about 7 1/2 hours. Last week we got to Russell before stopping for the night - 360 miles - 71/2 hours.
Actual numbers - sometimes think folks at TL have never really travelled???

I believe they all use the speed limit without any slowdowns for any reason. My GPS consistently shows a 45-50 mph overall and a 55-57 moving average on a mixed road type trip. I set at around 62 on my cruise, so I lose about 12-15 mph overall and I've found it to be accurate even on mixed roads.
On Denver to Hays, because its flat and straight, I would be optimistic on the time.
