I had both my knees replaced the same day would i do it this way again you bet in a heart beat. I was 54 when i had it done a little young maybe but i am on my 11th year with the new ones and they are great. Dr told me if i look after them they will still be good in 25 years and so far i believe him. No jogging but all the golf i want.
PS He told me not to try dragging any moose out of the bush.

I had my right knee done two years ago. Like everyone else, I wish I hadn't of waited so long. I was 52 at the time. We tried the orthoscopic first but it really didn't do that much. I was camping within 3 weeks of surgery. Do the therapy and be careful with the pain killers. I actually thought the pain from the surgery was less than the pain I had every day. Research the doctor and make sure they do a lot of this type of surgery.

I have 1 knee that was a year old in Jan and the other will be 2 in July. My knees are wonderful. I can hike, kneel, squat down - all sorts of things I could not do for years. Yes, I wish I had them done sooner, but didn't wait until I couldn't walk so that I would be strong enough. Recovery PT is not fun, but it is so important. You are not too young to get your knees replaced, you are too young to be that crippled.

The wife & I had bith done in the last year and it was worth it by far.We did not do them at once as our Dr. would not do it that way.He said that is too long to be under and too much possibility of blood clots so no can do. He has done over 1100 of them so he knows what is right in his opinion. The key to our wonderful recovery is we started our rehab about 2 months before surgery. The drs office folks were amazed at our recovery rate.We carried our canes in to the Drs for our first post surgical visit to avoid getting in trouble. They called us their super patients as they had never done spouses back to back like that. The post meds were only as necessary but we did not abuse ourselves to be heroes. The replacement he uses are at about a high 90 percent of 25 years lasting and mid 90s percent for 30 years. They are a beautiful joint. I would do it again in a heartbeat. There are some minor limitations but nothing compared top the ones we had with so much pain.We walk and bike and do about anything we want but you are smart about it! Get er done! IHHO We are both at the 70 mark so 25 or 30 year joints are fine with usQ

Thanks everybody - all of it is reassuring and gives me hope. I'm getting close to - eh! let's be honest! - I'm 56 but the lack of being able to DO anything is killing me. I walk my dog 2x a day but sometimes the pain in my knees is too bad to permit me to take her more than about a block, and sometimes I can't walk her at all. I can't garden. I can't do housework as I'd like to. It's just the pits -as you all know - going from active to immobile. I'm going to be careful about checking out the doctors and will keep everyone's experiences in mind. John B, what is the name of the replacements that were used in you and DW? Thanks so much for sharing!

I had mine replaced at 58 after a fall that damaged the knee too badly to be repaired. They tried to repair it with a scope, and then SynVisc injections.

I waited 6 months before doing the replacement and should have waited about 6 weeks!

Pain and quality of life usually determine when it's time.
Life does not have to be a pain!

I have a rotating platform knee made by DePuy. It is so I have some more normal movement rather than the hinge like movement of the original knees. You may want to google it and see what you think. I can't tell it is any different from the real knees.

Galvorien52, I noticed your questions and thought it good to weigh in - Important: my wife, 59, had a knee replacement after listening to all the sales jobs on NRG and other gender-based prosthesis. Not to be negative, but she had, and still has, lots of pain and problems. Her doctor is a preeminent specialist in the Charlotte are, who has done many of these. Her problem? Low vitamin D, and soft bone density due to an early loss of hormones - my point? Request the simple lab tests on bone density and vitamin D level. I'm no doctor, but her D level was 16, and normal is 60-80, I understand. And there is no longer a vitamin D injection, so sub-lingual is considered most effective to bypass the need for liver dissemination. Her soft bone is the direct cause of post-surgery problems. She hates drugs, but is still on Hydrocone. If you find you have issues, you can address them on a PRE-surgery basis to improve your bone density - and, believe me, that is desirable. All the best to you.

"Dupuy" made in Warsaw Indiana! They are the standard design check them out online. I asked about the rotating platform & he said no to them for us! As I said he is the one who has done 1100 or probably more by now! We are extremely happy! Both of our situations were caused by Osteo arthritus causing missing cartilage so were bone against bone not a pretty site even on an xray. My wife held off 13 years as they did not want to do hers in her mid 50s but her quailty of life was really depreciated because of it. Now the joints are much better so pain No Longer!! Thank the good lord for talented medical field people!!!

Hello...
I had both knees replaced 8 weeks ago..Yes both..it was tough the first few weeks... would I do it again..you bet..My knee pain is gone..I am 70 years old and walk and ride my bike with NO pain...
The surgeon that did mine is only 52 years old and has his own knee replacement..So when I finally had enough pain..I did look for a surgeon who had lots of experience.
My only advice would be is to find a well experienced surgeon...
and be sure to do all of your rehab...and be careful how long you take the meds..Good Luck..

Here is the xray of my knees now...Sexy Huh!!!

The hardware they put in looks like a couple shoes on top of a turntable display!!!
