A couple of months ago I posted a thread talking about the problems that I was having with rain fade on my new King-Dome satellite dome. At the time I posted that I had tried a product called Dome Magic (which is made by King-Dome) with very poor results.

Well, I tried Dome Magic again but this time I tried something different… I followed the instructions. And lo and behold it works great now..! As I am writing this, I am watching Direct TV on our satellite dome and it is raining heavy with no signal loss or degradation.

The big difference is the first time I used Dome Magic I did wash the dome as instructed but I didn’t do a very good job. The next time it rained, I lost the satellite signal immediately.

After trying several other solutions from wax to Dawn dish soap, I decided to try Dome Magic again. This time I thoroughly scrubbed and rinsed the dome at least three times. I then wiped the dome with rubbing alcohol (as per the instructions) and then applied the Dome Magic.

Since treating the King-Dome with Dome Magic the second time, I have been through several heavy rain storms with no loss to the satellite signal.

Wow, what a difference following instructions makes.

Hi LGant,

I hate to burst your bubble but, If your signal strength is in the 90's, You will never loose your picture in the heaviest of storms.

Next time you do loose your picture, when it returns, look at your on screen signal meter and you will find that it is less then 80 causing your picture loss in heavy cloud cover.

Dome spray is a sales helper for poor reception and does nothing, you can have 10+ inches of snow on your dome and still have a great picture.

The only thing that effects your signal is something obstructing your line of sight, or morning dew which is dew over the horizon, not dew on your dome.

Good Luck

how much is that stuff, 40 some bucks a can

If you had a Motosat they say "Don't bother" cause they are as good without treatment as the king dome is with it.

Domes, all of them, tend to fade in the rain, no way around it

However a heavy rain, may do less damage than a light one.

Don't worry. You didn't burst my bubble.

I am new to the "satellite world" and do not know enough about it to dispute what you said. I do believe what you said is true concerning signal strength. However, I had a noticeable improvement with satellite reception in the rain in the exact same spot where I was having rain fade problems before. I think it is very unlikely that the signal strength changed for that location at the same time I applied the second treatment. That plus the fact that I have not had any rain fade problems since applying the second treatment leads me to conclude that the Dome Magic treatment did improve my reception in the rain.

(btw: I used the Magic Dome packets that cost around $10 each.)

The packets are the best! If you have dew on the dome in the morning and TV wont work wipe off dome with a towel everything is fine ! When I used the packets I didnt have to get up and do that in the same spot The packets are so much better than the spray can it covers heaver and like you said clean good and wipe 2 good coats wait till the first one dry's before doing the second

I agree. I was using Rain X before and it worked okay. The King Dome product works much better. You can't always get better than 90 signal strength and rain will definitely affect reception. With the King Dome product, all is well except in the heaviest of downpours.

If I had it to do over, I would choose a Motosat over any dome. Oh,well. Live and learn.
