Hate to tell you but when I was young say 40 years ago I did fall out of our family Pup and my dad tried everything to not have that happen but every time we went out I fell out and he bought the trailer brand new and it had bungi cords back then not velcro. My hybrid actualy has velcro and a body pillow keeps you from falling out.

To the prior post of Mike 4947 and MikeUp regarding old cords or improper setup (see below)......

No - I beg to differ and I am frankly a bit put off by your post(s). The PopUp was a Coleman just a year or so old and set up correctly.

You set up a similar unit and see how easy it is to wiggle your arm out of the bunk end. My son did not fall all the way out but he was hanging!

If you were not there, you don't know enough to have such an offensive strong opinion.

On a lighter note, I would report this to the moderator - but you are he!

As an FYI: anyone who had someone go out under the bunk end canvas did not set it up right or had a badly stretched out bungie cord that should have been replaced.

Well, I would take the camper back to the dealer because there was something wrong with the manufacture if you did indeed setup the bunk end correctly. It wouldn't be the first bungee cord to be cut to the wrong length, missing a attachment cleat, or damaged before you took delivery of the unit.
You can of course force something out the canvas because there is some stretch left when setup properly, but if there's any real "looseness" to let a child "slide out", even partially, something was damaged or incorrectly installed.

We always used sleeping bags for the children. It's quite difficult to roll out of a sleeping bag. When they were small they would sleep crossways to the bunk. I would also recommend flipping the mattress over so the vinyl side is up. For added security you may want to have one of the bedrails mentioned above.

I know I have seen posts on where your baby sleeps in the pop up, and I have done searches that seem to take more time than I have available.
Here's the deal, last year our baby slept in a pack and play that we put in the dinette. Worked great! However he is 2 now and we would like to find a safe way for him to sleep in one of the bunk ends, Mainly for convenience of set-up. (taking the table down...setting up the pack and play...taking down the pack and play...setting up the table...etc.) I know, it's not that big of a deal, but we were wondering if anyone has found a simple way to have your toddler sleep in the bunk end without fearing they will fall? We are thinking about a simple bed rail, but that seems like it would be a challenge to lift your child over the top and back again (Being we have a high-wall) I was also wondering if some kind of a cargo net rigged up somehow might do the trick?

Any great ideas?
What have you done?

I built a home-made bed-rail for the dinette and had them sleep there in a sleeping bag. That way no rolling out b/c of the three dinette walls (and bed-rail) but they could still climb out easily when they woke up without fear of falling off the bunk-end. We sleep over the tongue in our Niagara so the only available bunk-end is the back with the small step to get down. Not ideal for a toddler. This year my older is 4 and younger is 2 so the older boy is now on the bunk-end (with normal bed-rail) and youngest is on dinette with home-made bed rail.

And to be honest we've not put anything on the sides of the bunkend where the 4 year old sleeps b/c with the sides bungeed I can barely get my hand out so we're not worried about him falling out.

With the Niagra setup, I don't think you have to worry too much. 2' to the couch, 2 feet to the floor. All but the frailist 2 yo's should be able to handle a 2' fall to padding. Kids are made out of rubber anyway.

To be safe though, put a pillow or something soft on the edge of the counter, and maybe the duffle bag full of clothes on the floor.

As far as the sides, mine has been strong enough to handle 6 & 8 yo's wrestling. Though maybe an extra bungie or installing velcro might be beneficial.

We have a 2000 Bayside and when this problem came up for us I had my husband make a home made bed-rail/baby bed out of the small bench seat. We basically attached a rail that I padded and covered with flannel to a 1/2" peice of plywood with L brackets and then extended the size from the bottom with a peice of masonite. The seat cusion and backrest cusion are not the same thickness.....so the dimentions of the wood made the cusions even...We added velcro to the bottom of the masonite that matched up with the velcro that was alredy there for the seat cusion. We attached brackets on the bottom that accepted the legs...they where made of thick dowells....they screwed in and it all could be set up and taken down quickly. When in tow this sat in the floor flat with the back up against the cabinets. Then I could store the dinnette cusions right on top of it. It didnt really take up any space. We used this for the boys for about four or five years. When the youngest was about 6 he was getting too big for it. It was very sturdy and stable as I would climb over it to get into the back bed so I was right next to the boy/boys.. and Im no slouch LOL.

We just used some cushions on the 2 year olds side this past weekend. Didn't have any problems.

My body blocks our 2 year old! Seriously it does. I sleep on the outside and she sleeps on the inside with the 7 year old closest to the window end. Husband on the other bunk and 11 year old on the table bed. Yeah no room for romance there LOL!

The poster who put the Walmart link to the bed rail (sorry Im really bad with names) thats a good idea but is the weight of the mattress enough to hold it in place? That would work for me next year when shes 3 I think if I just put her and the 7 year old together if the mattress is heavy enough!
