DW went over to the MH yesterday to turn on the refridgerator, heard funny noises and smoke started coming out of the sides of the fridge, then a small explosion and flames shooting up the outside of the motorhome.DW called 911 and with the help of a neighbor was able to get the fire partially contained with a water hose before the fire department arrived. The fridge is in the slide that was extended so all damage is contained in the slide and no smoke damage internally.

To make a long story short the fire dept thinks it was a faulty gas regulator in the fridge. We are now waiting for the claim adjuster. The MH is still under first year warrantee so I need to notify the dealer. Going to be along process I'm afraid and am thinking the slide is going to need to be replaced. I have taken pictures in case legal issues develope.

Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

Doug

Be sure to take pictures and document everything. You'll probably get a hassle but don't let up on them and go corporate if necessary. My daughter got hassled and went corporate, they sent her a $500 gas card to deliver the rig to the dealer which was fixed pronto.

The recalls are on much older models.

What brand is the fridge? You should have been given the paperwork on it from Jayco.

We should all make note of this.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I guess it's too soon to know how long before you're back on the road! I guess, all said, you were lucky to have caught the fire, and contained it. I remember seeing one of the un-lucky ones on here a few months ago.

If it's still under warranty, you adjuster MAY go after the builder??? Who knows.
Don't let the adjuster send you to some NONAME repair facility, tell them you want it shipped BACK to the mfg...this may not happen, but try it.

Also use the word DIMINISHED VALUE, at some point during the negotiations. Tell the adjuster even after the unit is fixed it will be worth a LOT less because of the repairs, no matter who does the repairs.

Dimished Value (DV) is the loss in market value that occurs when a vehicle is wrecked and repaired. A reasonably intelligent consumer will not pay the same price for a wrecked, then repaired vehicle, as they will for a vehicle with no prior accident history. Even if the repairs were done well, the vehicle will still lose value.

It's just common sense.
Let's assume you were shopping for a late model used vehicle. You come upon a dealer who has 2 identical vehicles that match what you are looking for. These vehicles are the same year, make & model. They have the same mileage & options. They appear to be in the same general condition. The sticker price for both vehicles is $20,000. You ask the dealer if either vehicle has ever been wrecked and he tells you that one of the vehicles had sustained $6,500.00 in collision damage, but the repairs were expertly completed and you can not tell there was ever any damage. Now there are just 2 questions that remain.

1) Would you still give equal consideration to each vehicle?
If you answered no to #1
2 How much of a discount in the price would have to be offered in order for you to give the wrecked and repaired vehicle equal consideration?

How much value has your vehicle lost?
Don't let the insurance company tell you. Ask The Experts or professional vehicle appraisers who will provide you with the documentation you need to get the compensation you're entitled to.

Update, yes this a Norcold not Dometic and the rig is still under warrantee

I talked to the dealer and emailed him some pictures that he is going to forward on to Jayco and will let Jayco decide what they want to do. So now it's a waiting game.

I am a little nervous to the fact that I removed the dinette and replaced it with a couple recliners about 2 weeks ago and had to relocate a AC outlet. We have used the fridge and the outlet since and all tested fine so I know its not an issue but don't know how Jayco will look at that.

Just now got a call from the dealer and they told me that Jayco will be calling me direct.
