Would like to throw my wheel covers away and run "naked" but rusty hubs look bad.

Has anyone painted the hubs to match the wheel color?

If so, what type paint?

Any reason to not do this?

Thanks

Probably be easier to pick up some chrome or black center caps from a tire store.

Font hubs need a high temp paint. Rear can use any rattle can paint... they don't get as hot. Keep overpray off rubber brake hoses, and away from the ABS sensors and O2 sensors in the front.

Go ahead and paint them! It won't hurt a thing (except for getting paint on the business portion of brake discs).

Clean 'em up, and paint away!

I would scrub those hubs with a harsh scrub brush and hand dish soap to cut through the grease. Then powerwash them to blast the rest of the dirt out from the cracks. Engine degreasing spray by GUNK or similar will also work well. Just be sure all dirt and grease is removed.

The rough surface on the cast hubs would not show brush marks, so I would brush-paint them to control what gets painted, and also for simplicity. Consider a "complimentary" color if you can't get an exact color match to the wheels.

I always had good rust protection in general with Rustoleum primer and paint.

Personally, I love the aluminum wheels, but could never justify the huge expense.

Auto parts stores have paint for brake calipers in various colors. This would take the heat on your hubs caused by heavy braking.

I'm free of prostate cancer for 5 years now.
All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

Think about it....if the hubs got so hot that the paint is coming off, the bearing grease has boiled out, and the wheels bearings are glowing red.

Agreed! Just get a couple of cans of (the dangerous stuff, not the safe stuff) Brake Cleaner, clean off your hubs, and throw some Rustoleum at 'em!
