My cousin has a 2003 and it does not get the fuel mileage that my 2004 gets. Wonder where the difference would be found - computer program?

I would not doubt improvements in computers and software could account for some of the differences between say 2001-2003 5.9's and newer 2004-2006's.
My previous Cummins was a 2001 w/4:10's and 5 speed. I suspect axle ratio did not help me there, but I could never get much better than 17 or so with that one.
Like I said earlier in this thread, 19 MPG on highway not rare for my 2006. 3:73's help greatly, as do computer improvements I suspect. oh, and 2001 was a 2500 SRW while 2006 is dually.

I have a 3500/4x4/long bed/1999/5.9 Cummins/ with a 3:55 rear with 66,000 on it. On the Long Island Expressway I can get 22.5 mpg at 62mph - 1750 RPM. With the camper the overhead show 15.5 gph (Arctic fox 1150 about 4,000lbs.
As soon as I get off Long Island it drops by about 1 gph.
In the mountains out west it dropped at some points to as low as 11 mpg.

I'm sure waiting to see some of this miliage. I only have about 5K miles on my 350 DRW, 6.7 with 3:73 gears, but I would be happy with 17 or 18 unloaded, and 14 loaded. I'm keeping the rpm about 1700 and driving like the Fuzz was following me....must be the breakin period?

Didn't read all the topics, but my 04 dually gets 20-22 mpg on average. I fully understand that I will be thought a liar.

Our '99 Dodge 2500 gets 25-26.5 unloaded average. We now have 150,000 miles on the truck. Mileage has only gotten better as we drive the truck. Truck has a high capacity air filter but is stock otherwise.
Don't believe me - I have pictures showing 26.1 - 26.4 mpg on the computer. This was with around 500 miles on the tank.

If you drive right. No fast starts and stops. And run 55 or less. I can believe it. My 2004 Duramax with a 18ft lund boat behind it. I got 21.9 on a trip with it the other day.
No AC and running 50 MPH on 4 lane roads. Only 1 stop light on the 50 mile trip . But the next day with the AC on towing the boat same trip only got 18 with the AC on. That was filling up at the same fuel stop. And figured by hand.

This last weekend. Did some testing on my 05 Dually with the 5.9. Results....
Camper on and loaded.
Tow/Haul mode engaged on the automatic.
17800 miles on OD. Not even broke in yet. Far from it.
55 MPH. = 20.6. 18.5 uphill.
60 MPH. = 16.5. 14.6 uphill
65 MPH. = 12.5. No diff.
Tow/Hual off.
55 MPH. = 14.5. Uphill 13.2
60 MPH. = 13.5.
65 MPH. = 12.5
For what it's worth.

Am I missing the specs on all these MPG posts ? ... are these 2 or 4wd trucks?
And the 12v motors REALLY shine on MPG. I know a guy in Canada with a 89 12v 5 speed 2500 that has gotten 32 mpg !

It looks like the key here is to keep the speed down.
My 2006 DRW 5.9 with a six speed and 4.10's gets 10 to 12 hauling the Lance 915 or the Recon fifth wheel. Thats at 70 mph, around 2,200 rpms I really dont drive the truck unloaded enough to check the mileage.
I've got a 2001 2500 with a automatic and 4.10's and running empty or a couple thousand pounds in the bed it gets around 17 to 19.
But I'm very happy with the Cummins power and reliability!
All you guys getting 20 mpg, are you using any fuel additives?
