20 plus is pretty standard on the 5.9, I'm waiting on some mileage reports on the 6.7 after 30-40K breakin mileage. Every one I know with the 6.7 has under 10k and 15-16 seems to be the average. When the new Ram HD's come out in 2010 we'll probably be in the market....maybe. I still love my truck !

MrPhelps wrote: I know this seems hard to believe but this is the average mileage currenly showing on my display averaged over about the last 1200 miles. This is mileage around town on business and back and forth to my office. I am driving it carefully and have Ricksons and a manual transmission, but this mileage is better than my wifes car and much better than I ever expected to achieve with this truck. I currently have 67K miles on the truck. On my last camping trip my average was 13.4 mpg loaded .
I had heard the mileage would improve as the engine breaks in . When new I was getting 13.5 .. then slowly up to my goal of 17.5 and now much better. I assume this mileage is due to learning how to drive it for the best results as well as engine break in. One other factor is that the tires are 3%-6% oversized so there is an argument that I could be getting even better mileage than the reading indicates.
Anybody else with one of these 5.9 Dodge DRW trucks getting similar results? I believe ya, I get 20 around town, and I'd like to say about 23mpg highway between 60-65. I don't know how, except for ratio maybe, but my mileage got better when my tires were replace for 2inch larger diameter one's, and then better when my exhaust was opened up. Now if the price of fuel would just drop, I'd be even happier. My wifes car only gets 20.2 most of the time, so we usually take the truck.

Our Dodge overhead displays tend to be a bit enthusiastic, often by 2 or more MPG.
It doesn't actually measure fuel usage but uses a program to calculate it from speed, throttle position, etc. It's really kind of a show the computer puts on for us (oil pressure gage is the same way).
Mine runs about .2 to 2.5 mpg off. I get 17-19 around town, 22-24 highway @60.

It certainly is possible.
My 2006 with six speed manual consistently gets 19 MPG on the highways at about 62-65 MPH. Slow it down some, and it goes up a little more.
Just a tish under 29,000 miles on it.

I really wanted the Dodge dually shortbed but I just couldn't get past the flairs they call fenders.. I sure made a mistake..
DSeckt,
I have the very truck you are refering too. Personally I like the fenders but thats not the point of my post. Your Ford has the better bed length for a short bed camper. (Dodge = 6'-3" Ford = 6'-8" IIRC) But thats also not the point of my post.
I have gotten as good as 20.3 calculated USMPG on one long road trip. But typically my MPG empty is in the 17-18 range for everyday driving.
With the 861 strapped on I have seen as low as 8.9 on a long streach of strong head winds, and as high as 14.5 on that same long streach going the other direction two days later! So an average of 11.7 isn't too far off....
Just for compairison sake to what you get.

I usually average about 21.9 to 22.3 at speeds of 55, I drive mine to work each day about 26 miles round trip daily and with a few side trips so far a full tank of fuel usually last me close to a month between fill ups can't complain about that beats my wife's Honda accord.

I average 22-23 Miles per Imperial gallon, with my 3500 SRW 4x4 (7600 pounds). No load.
I drive with the revs around 1750 rpm on the highway, about 100 KMH or 60-62 MPH. Auto Transmission.
If the 5.9 cant get over 20 MPG empty there is something wrong with the engine set up or the drivers habits.
Of course you can push up the revs and watch your wallet empty quite quickly with diesel at $6.40 (CDN) per gallon.
