MrPhelps wrote: I know this seems hard to believe but this is the average mileage currenly showing on my display averaged over about the last 1200 miles. This is mileage around town on business and back and forth to my office. I am driving it carefully and have Ricksons and a manual transmission, but this mileage is better than my wifes car and much better than I ever expected to achieve with this truck. I currently have 67K miles on the truck. On my last camping trip my average was 13.4 mpg loaded .
I had heard the mileage would improve as the engine breaks in . When new I was getting 13.5 .. then slowly up to my goal of 17.5 and now much better. I assume this mileage is due to learning how to drive it for the best results as well as engine break in. One other factor is that the tires are 3%-6% oversized so there is an argument that I could be getting even better mileage than the reading indicates.
Anybody else with one of these 5.9 Dodge DRW trucks getting similar results?
My old 1993 12 valve 5.9 got 20's till I messed with it for more power. It droped to 15 then

On paper my mileage would be even bettter! .. between 3% and 6% higher than the reading just due to 19.5's!

The Chevy and Ford guys are envious unbelievers. My 2004 Dodge Ram just turned over 77,000 miles. With camper loaded on a recent 500 mile trip I averaged 16.4 mpg. Since coming back from trip and driving around town, mileage is up to 17.1 and I haven't reset in over 1,000 miles.
But like my son who drives a 2006 Chevy with a Duramax diesel, he says at least he has a real comfortable seat.

I have 19.5 Rickson's also, but my tire OD is same as stock.

Hey! I'm delighted to see so many 5.9 0wners reporting such great milage. I got laughed out in 06 when I wrote here about mine doing just a hair over 20 with the camper on. I'm just back from our winter in FL and got just over 17mpg on a US gallon coming home, but I was in a hurry and didn't keep the speed down. Our camper is a Northstar which is a foot narrower than most so that helps too. On the way down I got 20 going through the Adirondaks with all those hills. Don't know if it helps much but I have been using Power Service and 2 cycle oil as an additive. The truck is an 04.5 absolutely plain jane 2x4 single cab 6 spd std tranny with long bed, stock tires aired up 80# back and 70# front and I usually try to keep it under 2K rpm. Also had the reflash for milage and smoke on startup. That helped a little. Looks like lots of other folks know how to keep the milage up too. With the cost of diesel it sure makes sense. It can be done!
Cheers!

I have gotten over 20 with my 2006 3/4 ton 4x4 Megacab 5.9 6 speed. To get this I have to resist the urge to race the Fords but it can be done!
I am running 19.5s (34 inch tires) but I check my mileage with GPS and hand calculate the mileage.

It can absolutly be done and still get the great milage. Just do not hammer it off the line (pretend to have an egg between your foot and the accelerator) and do not exceed 55 MPH. Doing this you will get the milage and still beat the Ferds!

I wish I could get that can of mileage with my CTD 5.9. My lance 861 weighs 4400 lbs fully loaded with water and supplies and I very rarely go faster that 55 MPH and I only average 13 MPG.
