FYI for all of you who are traveling with your RV cross county.
We left Phoenix, AZ about a week ago headed to Indiana for the summer. As we pulled our 30' Jazz down the road at about 10 mile per Gal. we stopped about 3 times a day for gas using our American Express card. Into the second day our American Express card was denied.
Needless to say it is an embarrassing situation.
At the end of the day I called American Express to see what the problem was and they informed me that anytime we are going to travel out of state and buy large amounts of fuel we need to contact them about 10 days in advance due to the problem of stolen credit card fraud. They even wanted to know about how long we intend to stay in Indiana and want us to contact them again before leaving to travel back to Phoenix, AZ in the fall.
I just wanted to let all American Express customers know of this situation and save you of the embarrassment of having someone tell you your credit card has been denied.
We would stop using our American Express card if it was not for the fact that at the end of the year we receive a 2% rebate on our purchases.

Most credit and charge car companies advise you to let them know when you will be traveling...protects you and the company

We always call our CC company to inform them of what may be seen as unusual useage.
We called a few days ago to inform them we would be in Canada for the Summer. When we go on a cruise we inform them of where we will be using the card. We appreciate them looking for unusual useage as it could save us a lot of grief
if a card should get lost or stolen.

I don't mind calling the credit card company but could not deal with the other part. How far in advance do you have to notify her?

We never call our CC co. Sometimes we don't even know 10 days in advance where we're headed next. Am glad we got rid of our AMEX 6 years ago. They charge retailers too much anyhow!

I've had that happen with a different credit card issuer. While I understand the need for protection, I just wish they would let members know the rules or at least some broad guidelines before we're in a situation like that.

I have actually had the fraud department "help" by stopping a re-charge at a Sears when I was buying my appliances. I bought all my appliances (6) on the same day and signed on the dotted line, I was building my house so I used the Discover Card until I could write a check from my construction loan.
Anyways, the sneaks decided that they gave me too much of a discount and accidentally gave me free shipping, so they tried re-running the entire transaction! I got a call from Discover at home and they called the Sears' store to set them right.
I do let companies know a week or so in advance if I will be out of the tri-state new england area just as a heads up with fraud as it is today.

I never bother to call Amex. I've never had them put a freeze on me either. Been cross country, up to Canada and all buying large amounts of fuel.
We having a trip coming up, we'll see..
A lot of it has to do with spending habits. If you usually only charge 1 or 200 a month and you exceed that in a few days the alarm bells go off.
If you're like us and you usually charge 1 or 2K a month, it takes a while before the alarm bells go off.

If AMEX sees me buying lots of electronics (e.g. Ipods and such for Christmas gifts) they've stopped me cold at the cashier and it says "call AMEX customer service". It urks me to death but they have velocity checks and look for abnormal purchase patterns. We are the victims of fraud even if a penny hasn't been stolen from us because they have all these built-in controls to slow down the theives.
I'm from Tennessee and AMEX stopped my second purchase at Cabelas in Hamburg, PA after I bought a $700 depth finder at Cabelas for my boat. I used another card. I fully understand this but it is huge inconvenience to have to do this in front of a long line at the cashier. I called 'em up later and asked them to take the block off my account.
The good thing about AMEX is that they make it painless to dispute charges on your card with no hassles.
