Al

No-one said that it could hurt by changing early - just that it was wasting money.

It's like changing oil before you have to - gives you a warm fuzzy feeling but is wasting money.

The best advice comes from those that run fleets of vehicles - they are guided by the high cost of having a vehicle out of service versus the profit/loss statement at the end of the year.

chastho is correct. The best filtration is when the filter element has a thin coating of dust. Again this is best FILTRATION, not best air flow.

That's what I was taught also. The dust coating actually improves the filtration and hinders the air flow.

Now, where is that perfect compromise!

A slightly dirty filter, whether automotive, swimming pool, etc,. is the most effective.
