Hi,
We are a family of 4 with a 2 and 5 year old. Would pack light and mainly be used for short 2 hour weekend trips in the flats of the midwest (KY, OH, IN). The Pathfinder has a 6000lbs towing with a 112 wheelbase. We are looking at TT's that weigh "dry" around 3700-4000lbs and are in the 21-23 foot range. Do you think this would be an OK setup? We cannot upgrade to a V8 truck, so that is out of the question. We perfer to stay with a TT rather than a PUP or hybrid, but do realize with might have to go to a small hybrid.

Rockwood 2306
Palomino 230
Outback 21RS (and the other manufacutures with same floorplan)

Thanks for any feedback!!

After you load up the family and all the assorted junk in the Pathfinder you will find out that that 6000 tow rating shrinks to a lot less than that. For that vehicle stick to a tent trailer. You will probably not be happy with anything more.

Go for it. To many people in here think you have to have a 3/4 ton or bigger for just a pup. I tow a 4000 trailer with my liberty and the only complaint I have it that I wish it had a litte more HP for the long uphills on the highway. Other than that it is great.

I think you will be maxing out the Pathfinder. That said, it may still be a viable set up. I would invest in a quality WD/sway control system such as the Reese HP Dual Cam. You may not like the way the Pathfinder struggles under the load but it still may be safe. Only weighing the set up can tell you whether you are over loading.

You will need a dually diesel. No way you can tow anything more than a Popup. Wait for it, such responses usually follow, especially from people who don't have such a setup. Armchair quarterbacking.

As an fellow Nissan owner, I have the same chassis setup as you. Slightly smaller wheelbase, so my tow rating is 5000 lbs.

My TT is 25', weighs 3993 lbs empty, but with all the options. I travel with the waste tanks empty, and very little fresh water onboard. I travel light as much as possible.

I have an AT, so I leave the OD off when towing. This puts the 5 speed AT into 4th gear. My RPMs at 63-65 MPH (max speed of trailer tires) is 2500-2750. I get 8.5-11 MPG, typically right at 10 MPG. I have plenty of power left over for on-ramps, passing (though not done often), hills (no mountains in FL). Sharker6 on this forum also tows his heavier TT with his Xterra. He tows in the mountains, and has posted many times about how well his rig does. Search the archives.

Here's my setup:

If I didn't think my vehicle was up to the task, I'd go buy a new Titan. But I can't justify it. It does that well.

I recommend getting a Prodigy brake controller with the pre-wired adapter cable, makes it a plug-n-play installation. Also an Equalizer hitch. My rig rides level, and is stable. Your slightly longer wheelbase will pull a trailer even better.

Never use "Dry" Weight as a Guide

Remember that you must Add LP, Battery and Stuff...

Hey ! Hello Road Ruler !

I will be in my 6 th year this season with my set up and still very happy with it but if I think just a little bit, I think I should follow the advise of many members here and for my next TV, get a "design by God himself" F-350 diesel dually with all the super chips and on and on... I should then consider myself as a REAL Rving modern GLADIATOR !!!

Not a "cheap" style japeneese camper...

Best regards

Fash82: I have a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder LE, towing a Jayfeather 254. Dry weight on the trailer is 4520lbs & loaded 5200lbs. I picked up my trailer at RV Direct in Des Moines IA and drove back to B.C. Canada through various mountain passes and very strong headwinds in Montana. I never felt under powered or had any trailer sway. I drove 3210kms back and average 10.5mpg-as per veh. comp.
Before purchasing my trailer I spoke to a Nissan Tech and was informed that I would have no problem towing up to the 6000lbs limit. Buy an Equal-i-zer hitch and P3 brake controller and your good to go. If you need any info or help plugging in or hooking up anything email me.

I have an 04 GMC Envoy with the 4.2L Inline 6. It also has 3.42 gears, Reese Equalizer hitch with Reese friction sway control. I have a Tekonsha Envoy brake controller and Im towing a 08 Jayco Jayflight 19bh. Its 3750lbs dry with a 6000lbs max trailer cap. We are a family of 4 as well, and I havent had any trouble at all towing. I have to tow in 3 instead of D, and Im not going to win any races uphill...but it tows just fine.
A couple things you may want to look into getting....some sort of towing mirrors. As Im pretty sure you wont be able to see around the TT without them...lord knows I couldnt.
Also another wise investment...a tranny cooler.
I dont know if your TV has an external cooler, but its just a little extra piece of mind.
