I'd say it's about the same. My wife (retired 1994) and I (retired 1990) each have a pension and social security. You know S.S. doesn't take much of a yearly increase and our pensions increase each October by 3% of the amount we got the first year. Our medicare premium goes up each year but I'm now at the point where the law says I MUST take a withdrawal from my IRA. I take the minimum. My wife will have to withdraw in 2 years. She'll take the minimum. We don't, however, like the over $4 diesel fuel or the almost $4 gas. When we snowbird this coming winter we'll store our TT in the RV park for $35 per month rather than towing it back & forth.

Maybe the question should be:"Is the COUNTRY better off now than it was four years ago"?

Much better off than 4 years ago and now retired. All this doom and gloom about fuel prices. I do not hear any complaints about the price of smokes, booze, theatre tickets, or bottled water. Try getting tickets to a major rock band. Nobody is complaining about these things and they have all increased dramatically in price but we complain only about gas prices.

But, like the story alluded to, I'm not feeling all of this prosperity that Washington keeps telling me that I am in the midst of.
I hate to break the news to you but George is dead. Do ya think that the media is the manipulator? Sorry you are not doing well financially.
Good Luck
Well, I wouldn't say I'm doing bad finacially. I don't have to look far to see somebody worse off than me. I just thought the story was interesting. If what they say is true about the inflation and unemployment numbers not being calculated the same way as they were back in the '80s. It would make more sense by comparison than today's numbers. I love to say "I sure miss the '90s." I'm not throwing Bush or Clinton or anybody else under the bus. I was just making an observation. I would need more data before assigning blame...
Good points. But I don't use the same stuff that I used in 1980. (Some may accuse me of that however.) The question was about if I am better off, and I am. glad to hear that you are too. I do believe that much of the media has an agenda.
I bought an IBM personal computer for about $3,000 in 1982. I have switched many times since but suspect it's value today would be a negative number. I got the DW a cell phone the size of a brief case, never mind.
Good Luck

Last I noticed, an increase in movie tickets or cigarettes didn't cause everything else to increase. Fuel prices have however caused everything else to increase. If prices reduced back to say $2.35 as rapidly as they increased to where they are today, I think you'd see the economy start to open up.
