We just got back today from Asheville and Gatlinburg. Absolutely beautiful. In Asheville I HIGHLY suggest Campfire Lodgings campground, but be sure to get a premium site. The view is breathtaking. In Gatlinburg, we stayed at Outdoor Resorts. It was very nice and peaceful, but quite a drive from the Natl. Park and the town. We were lucky enough to see four bears in the Park!
Something to consider is the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) which runs from the Great Smokey Mountains National Park all the way to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia... it's a 469 mile scenic drive that connects the two National Parks...

Smokies are beautiful, if you don't require hookups, stay in the Park. Our favorite is Elkmont, Cades Cove is nice as well. If you need hookupsTownsend is quiet compared to Gatlinburg. We have been going to the Smokies since the 70's. PM me if you like.

Lot of talk here about no hook ups. You will not need hook ups. The BRP and the Smokeys are in my back yard! Almost all the cgs have fresh water and a dump station. All you have to do is keep your batteries charged and make a couple of runs a week with your rig to the dump station which is included with the camping fees. By the way the Blue Ridge Parkway is the most visited Nat Park in the US.
