My Dometic Fridge blew out. I was about 5 miles from home and began to smell something strangely sweet. After about a minute, I heard a metallic bang and the smell got stronger. When I got home, I could then identify the ammonia smell and could tell it was coming from the fridge. Started to get suffocating, so I opened the windows and got out. Snuck back in and emptied the fridge quick, so as not to loose any food. Got a little sick to my stomach. Very glad I was not sleeping at the time or who knows what would have happened. Maybe I'd be dead by now. Its kind of scary how dangerous a fridge could be. It was only 6 years old, so it seems unusual that it blew out.
Tomorrow, I'll pull it and see what actually blew. Anyone know a good source on cooling units?

Did you check to see if it was on the callback list because this is what could happen to them.

Just went around with Dometic on our own refrig....cooling unit failure.....WAS on the recall list, however, Dometic stated "cooling unit NOT on the recall list, only the fire resistant shield that would have been placed inside access area to prevent fire IF the cooling unit failed"....no recourse here but to repair or replace on my own dime....and it was ONLY 3.5 years old....good "acceptable service life", huh????? Good luck with yours, we're replacing with new unit (and 5 year warranty) later this month at CW...FWIW

That is what I read too and assumed what you found out. Too bad they didn't try to make it more robust so it wouldn't fail rather than cover it up the quick and dirty way. Mine is six years old, still quite young I would say - the inside looks brand new. The original lasted 20+ years. I'm very surprised no one has been really messed up with the ammonia and a corresponding suit. What saved me was the fact that I was driving rather than sleeping.
I was looking on Ebay, seems there are a few after market cooling units in the under 4 bills category. Those are the least expensive I have found. Anyone bought one on Ebay?

Well, I decided with the history I'm hearing here about Dometic I would at LEAST get 5 years out of this new unit with the extended warranty....this one will probably fail at 5.5 years.....are these made in the USA? Doesn't say much for engineering and quality with Dometic, does it? IMHO, of course
