Here in the Texas public school systems, teachers are adequately paid, with excellent pension opportunities for the years of their service, and benefits to boot. I know of at least two retired school teachers that are pulling down reasonable enough pensions to live on in retirement, and they are in their early 60s.

Joe,
Starting teacher pay here is $32,740 a year if you have a Bachelor's degree, $1500 more a year for a Master's and only $1900 more a year for a Doctorate. It takes 14 years of service to get into the $40,000 range. Teachers who have worked for 20 years make $52,017. The pay isn't chicken feed, but it's not nearly up to par with other professionals of similar education.
And before I start hearing that teachers only work 9 months a year, that's not the case. Teachers have to stay longer than the kids and have to report back to work earlier than the kids. Most teachers take continuing education classes (paid for out of their own pocket) during the summer to keep licenses current. Not only that, but summers are spent planning, organizing and getting ready for the next year. I know many teachers who spend much of their summer in their classroom working.
Retirement and benefits? Yes, they have those like nearly every other government employee.

In every park, Everyday, bus loads of school kids are spending valuable 'CLASSROOM' time running round in the parks all day. When I got home...turned on the TV...yep, a news report of all the fun kids are having at the park. Its no wonder everyone is constantly complaining that the kids can't read. I can't wait for the next time they want me to pay more 'EDUCATION' Tax!
BTW...who is paying for that VERY expensive diesel fuel for all those school buses to take all those kids WAY OUT to the woods?
BTW...Am I still paying those teachers when the kids are playing in the woods?

You might get better information from...a teacher.
As for the OP's post.........................I have no words. I must not have spent enough time in the classroom.

Is that the average of college graduates or ALL Americans' income?

My kids go to school in FL and the school does not pay for field trips or bus expenses incurred on these trips if buses are chartered. One son recently returned from a field trip that cost us nearly $500. That was after a school fundraiser too.
We gladly covered other trips that cost us several hundred dollars each because we feel they are valuable learning tools directly related to their coursework and give the kids a breather from the sterile classroom environment.
