I do use the VMSPC so I should be able to really see the REAL difference on the next trip.

Does anyone know where I can post the spreadsheet so others can download it? Some of you other spreadsheet guys might want to improve it some. I was going to add a few features, but I had better things to do (read that, my wife had better things for me to do).

One of my motivations was to show some non-forum types that are complaining about the price of fuel and how the oil companies are screwing us that if they just slow down, it could be the equivalent of lowering the price of fuel significantly. If you're disgusted with the oil companies obscene profits, the best way to get even is to slow down. I figured the best way to get even was to own their stock, so I kind of like the obscene profits (and my future retirement may be partially funded by those obscene profits, but that's another story).

The VMSpc program is a free download. You can play around with it. You will need a box and cable to connect your coach to your laptop. I think is is around $375. Go to my last post on this subject for their site.

Where did you download the base spreadsheet from?

Diesels have fairly similar specific fuel consumption over a wide range of load, gas engines are best at torque peak rpm and about 70% of full load, drop off rather badly above and below that. Bottom line: a mpg calculator based on power consumption is utterly useless.

A prior thread had a downloadable spread sheet that calculates engine HP required for roadspeed and grades. The author adjusted the factors to align its results with data in the Cat RV whitepaper Understanding RV Performance If I can find the original thread I'll post the link.

For all of you gearheads with extra time check out this GM document for calculating Truck Performance . Just select values that match your MH.

Chuck, an interesting Gm doc. Surprised that they show the power loss for diesel to be greater at high altitude than for gas. I've always heard it the other way around.

Likewise - and I asked the Allison shop to reprogram mine lower and they advised that they cannot do it.

It can easily be reprogrammed-- I had mine done. The change affects all shifts, not individual gear shifts-- basically you are telling the transmission that the max engine RPM is lower than is currently programmed.

But is should not be done if it would cause up-shifts that would allow engine operation at or close to WOT below peak torque RPM. If ALL your shifts put lowest RPM in all gears more than 100 RPM above peak torque RPM, you can consider reprogramming. But if you can currently operate in any gear at, say, 80% throttle within 100 RPM of peak torque RPM, you are not a candidate for reprogram.
