I spaced off one day last fall driving a truck that was higher geared then the one I usually drive. Got a ticket for 65, and it cost me $387.50-very expensive lesson!!

I spent 33 years on the CHP and could count on one hand the number of tickets I wrote to RV drivers. The very rare ones I wrote were usually initiated as a warning and the "customer's" demeanor "earned" him a "safe driving" award.
Those rare birds let their alligator mouth overload their hummingbird backside.
What gets expensive, as CJ5 jeeper learned are the court costs and penalty assessments, not the fine.
Get a reckless driving ticket or one for speed in excess of 100 mph in CA and you'll have to sell your first born. Well over $1,000.

In California, there is no laws concerning RV lane usage.
The laws are directed at all and any vehicle that is towing be it a 18-wheeler, gardener or travel trailer.
On a two-lane highway, the towed vehicle is limited to the far right lane. Three lanes or more, you can travel in the far right-two lanes.
This means that you can't travel in a car-pool lane (while towing) no matter how many people you have in the TV and this includes a MH with a toad.
As far as the speed limit, any vehicle towing anything is limited to 55mph on the interstates and to the posted speed-limits on all other roads.

Steve has it right on the money. Additionally, a 3 axle motorhome and a 3 axle bus can go the 65 or 70 limit unlike a 3 axle truck which is limited to 55.
Something else to look out for is failure to use turnouts in the mountains on two lane roads. 5 vehicles behind you, you must use the turnouts. That includes going downhill too.

Keep up with the trucks and you'll be fine. All the cars are doing 80 anyway.

Don't stay for more than two weeks without getting California registration! Sounds like a joke but I paid a $300 fine a couple years ago cause the judge didn't want to hear my excuse. Then I read in the paper about a family who was hassled by the CHP because they were in town from Oregon for their daughters wedding and had out of state plates and were accused of "living" in California for the week. Hopefully they've canceled that "crackdown" since.
