Our 15k main a/c is useless after mid day, as it barely keeps the inside temperature in our fiver a notch below the outside temps. Then, when the sun goes down it starts to catch up. We have had it looked at by the dealer and he of course says it is fine. Is this normal in Texas? We have three slides, which is the problem I imagine. If we put in a second unit, what has to be done to be able to run both of them at once? Thanks for any help from those of you who have been through this already!

our MH has two a/c's. when hooked up to 120v shore power or running from the 6.5 genset, we can only run one or the other.

when we are hooked up to 30 amp shore power (most parks) there is no problem running both.

see is you can find an appliance refrigeration place. the amount of freon the a/c's hold isn't much. if they are down just an ounce or two, makes a big difference. the appliance people daily work with the low quantities of refrigeration. maybe they can tell you what may be wrong with the unit.

good luck!!!

p.s. can relate to the heat. it's 92 here with very high humidity and our house a/c just decided to freeze up!! can't get anyone here until tomorrow a.m.!!!

Check here.

Firedude has just posted some stuff he did to combat the heat including a portable a/c that doesn't cost much and pulls half the amps that the overhead a/c does...enjoy

I have been checking air conditioners and the EER can vary. Some of the portables, like the one Firedude mentions in his article, are very efficient and others are not.

For a bedroom, a small 99 dollar window unit can be installed and pulls 520Watts or less and does a very good job of cooling. We use one on our 18ft TT instead of the roof air which we downsized because of noise and over-cooling. Now it is quiet, no vibration, and most of all a controllable temperature. It is an inexpensive option for the couple months you may need it. I built a shelf that clips onto the window and the a/c is light enough to bring in and out when we boondock. It has saved our Mexico/Texas rv adventures.

In your case, you probably have room for the portable unit. Keep us posted on what your outcome is.

I second the portable home unit. The one Firedude uses is one we actually use in our house. Great unit. Would work well on those trailers with open floorplans. We also have the 'normal' window units in the bedrooms.

For the RV, look at your windows first and measure the openings. Then find a unit that will fit. They come in a lot of shapes.

I am sure you know this already, but, having an awning on the South side can help the heat load.

I have 2 in my unit. However, I have to be plugged into 50 amp service before turning on both. They draw a lot amps at startup. They both keep the unit cool even in 100 deg heat. They may run a little more but they still cool. We use a circle fan inside for further cooling if needed.

We used to get the temp down to about 62 at night and then it would hold at about 73 during the day when it got up to 95 with 1 ac. I would install the 2nd ac. We were quoted $1000k by the manufacturer and $750 by the dealership we purchased the unit at.

My 15K Carrier was like that above 85 degrees. Tough to live in...caused quite a grumpitude if you know what I mean.

I added A/C #2 prior to the next trip.

Then, I read where RV A/Cs frequently leaked cold air directly into the warm air return. This causes the unit to "think" it's cool enough so it cycles the compressor off prematurely.

I removed the ceiling grille and turned the unit on. I carefully stuck my hand up into the warm air return and sure enough, lots of cold air was being blown past the gasket/seal. I used some metal foil duct tape to seal the gasketed areas, eliminating the leaks and improving the output to the ceiling vents.

I rarely use both A/Cs now...but it sure is nice to have two of them, 'specially when it's really humid!

Also check the vent seal to the ductwork, the hole in my ducts were about 1/2" larger than my vents

Truth is in Texas, one A/c will only work up to about a 28' RV. Beyond that you need two. It is really stupid on the part of dealer and manufacturers to think that anyone would want to be hot in the Texas summers in an RV.
