I'm eyeing the 9200 BTU Polar Cub at 9.0 amps... a few bucks more than the HD unit, but no window exhaust...

Thats the route i went, Bought mine from PPLmotorhomes in Houston, installed it my self. Around $600. I also do the foil reflectex on the windows. I also made sure the primary AC ducted unit was not leaking cold air back into the return air. I also sealed 2 direct holes into the attic space. (Why was this NOT done at the Mfg.???) Now i no longer pump cold air into the attic space. My polar cub has it's own 12ga. cord that hooks to the 110 outlet on the shore power box...independent of the 30a. cord. Now i can set up our 5er in afternoon 100+degree july heat, Turn both units on & in 35-45min. have it down in the low 70s while it's 100+ outside. If i wanted, i could, & have had, the temps down into the upper 60s inside during a 100+ degree outside july summer day! Our 5er is 31ft. w/one slide 13ft+ long. Best money i ever spent!
Who makes the Polar Cub? Do you have a model number? Interested in possibly getting one, like the idea of no window exhaust. Not sure how that would work.

This unit is made by Coleman. 9200btu Its called the Polar Cub. Even though its only 9200btu...it cools like a 13.5 This has been a Excellent addition to our 5er. It will freeze you out of the bedroom if left at it's coldest setting.
Another big help in Texas heat/sun is tint the windows nice and dark. Use a good quality tint, not the cheapest you can find.
For those who may wish to install a second A/C unit but only have 30 amp service and option is to install the unit in an avalible roof vent opening then have the cord run down the wall. The cord can be run to a basement door opening or a outside mounted access plug and then use a heavy extension cord to plug in to a seperate 120 plug at the campsite.
A big problem with cooling trailers with slides is that the slide areas have very little insulation in the walls, floor and ceiling.
Also trying to run two A/C units on an underpowered generator is a big mistake. The start up amp draw of an A/C unit is a big draw, with out the needed power to start the compressor you are doing a lot of damage to the A/C boards and compressor.

Edit Note: My AC unit in the Post is refered to as a 8300btu. When these first Came out they were rated @ 7700btu, then they upped them to 8300btu then to 9200btu...But as best i can tell, they are all the same unit....since they only sell the 9200 now!
portablevcb wrote: I second the portable home unit. The one Firedude uses is one we actually use in our house. Great unit. Would work well on those trailers with open floorplans. We also have the 'normal' window units in the bedrooms.
For the RV, look at your windows first and measure the openings. Then find a unit that will fit. They come in a lot of shapes.
I am sure you know this already, but, having an awning on the South side can help the heat load.

So far my portable Amcor 9,000 BTU has been great! Install of the window hose exhaust was a breeze. I've actually only used it so far as the temps have only hit around 90 and have not even had to turn on the roof unit yet. Now this weekend we're supposed to hit the low 100's and along with a few other "cool" mods I've made for the heat I'm very confident I'll be very comfortable. The one thing i like is that if you are paying for the electricity like I am at myu current location the portable unit only draws 7.9 amps and 803 watts! that's about 1/2 of the average roof mount! I'd be glad to post my other mods for the heat for long term stays if anyone is interested, be safe AND cool.

Firedude - I use one of these (different brand & model) at home.
Works well.
No big deal (at home), but how do you handle the condensation drainage?

JC, mine has a small hose (tube) that runs down the length of the exhaust hose (Patented Auto Drain NanoMist Technology™)with a little nozzle type thing on the end. It features the patented AutoDrain NanoMist Technology that vaporizes excess fluid build up, eliminating the need to drain the unit.

Thanks! i tried looking up (Google) the 9200 BTU Polar Cub and the only thing I come up with is a roof mount and it costs about twice as much as my Amcor plus you'd have the install as well. Do you have a link??
FYI it's 104 out right now and with my one roof unit (Carrier AirV) and my portable Amcor it's 78 inside. Almost a 30 degree difference!
On edit. the one thing I want to stress as well is with the Amcor it only draws 7.9 amps at most (mine has been average 7.3) thus I can easily use it with my Honnda 2000 genny too! No problem at all. that was also a deciding factor for me. if I was dry camping and it got warm I'd have A/c with no problem.

Hi Tony- I was looking at $475 at pplmotorhomes, and the "few bucks more" was used loosely.... would have to add a ceiling assembly for another $60. I think I'd rather have it on top than to have a floor unit, just my druthers.
