While we were out in west Texas visiting Big Bend National Park, we also decided to visit Fort Davis State Park in the Davis Mountains. It is only about 2 hours north of Big Bend and well worth the drive.
The scenery there is beautiful and the state park outstanding. We had a great time. Hiking and mountain biking opportunities are great.
If you want more details on the trip and to see some photos, click here (thegaskins.dyndns.org).
Enjoy!

I agree a very nice park. The entire region around there is beautiful.
I will be a couple mile up the road the 1st week of June at the Prude Ranch for the Texas Star Party. Many of the attendees stay at the park and have good things to say about it.

For a star party, try the one at McDonald Observatory. They have a great program and usually have telescopes set up for visitors to look through. Its only a few miles from Fort Davis.

The nearby McDonald Observatory is worth a visit, too.

June should by fine in Davis Mountains--the altitude keeps it pretty cool at nights (the Davis Mountains are higher than the Appalachians). It will be hot during the day, but way cooler and drier than anywhere else in Texas! (i.e., avg low 56, avg high 92).

One of the best state parks in Texas. Love the javelinas that come through the creek bed in the park at night. What a kick!
