On my last trip out pulling our 5th wheel I noticed what sounds like pinging, marbles or rattling sound only at certain rpm's??
At first I thought it might be a lift pump issue (60,000 miles), but I did a search on that and found that there is never any noise associated with a lift pump, only a lose of power and eventual distruction of the injection pump.
The problem rpm's are 1700 & 2100, the more throttle I give at those rpm's the louder the noise. Now if I stop for gas or let it idle for awhile the sound goes away until 10 minutes into getting back on the road towing.
I have been through 4 tanks of diesel since this started with no change in symptoms and there is NO loss of power, at least so far.
Any ideas? Before you say take it to dealer, I'd rather fix it myself.

run a can of Seafoam or power service in your tank first. my does it also when I get some garbage fuel...I change the filter every 10k and put a can in the fuel filter canister and another can in the tank...smooths it out real fast...seafoam is good stuff...try that before wasting your time at the dealer....my two cents

Quote: Seafoam...put a can in the fuel filter canister.... NO! Seafoam has no lubricity. It must never be in the fuel system by itself. I'm not sure it does any good in a diesel, anyway. If you want to clean the injection system, buy a diesel fuel additive with added detergency plus added lubricity (and not ATF).
Ron,
Have you tried different brands of fuel? Have you tried a fuel additive with a cetane improver? It might be late ignition of the fuel caused by low cetane. I don't know if your engine has any sort of device to adjust injection timing to get the best injection point so ignition begins promptly after the piston passes top dead center. If the fuel is late starting burning you'll get a noise somewhat like you describe. Higher cetane fuel starts burning sooner after injection--less ignition delay. There probably are other reasons for the combustion noise you hear, and a good diesel shop might be a big help. Try a fuel additive with detergents and cetane improver. Try a couple of doses following the label directions. If that doesn't help, see a pro.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

My advice is get it to a dealer or an authorized cummins dealer! You are burning the tops of your pistons and that ain't good!!

Sounds like you are lugging your engine. I wouldn't add a magic additive, because there aren't any. Good luck.

Have you changed the fuel filter regularly? Have you checked the lift pump pressure? If it's the lift pump and you goto Dodge, they'll install the intank lift pump. According to Dodge, your 03' liftpump is no longer available. However, it's now available in the aftermarket at a cheaper price. In my opinion, the best option would be to go aftermarket lift pump with increased filtration (Fass, AirDog, etc).
Could also be the FCA. Fuel Control Actuator-about $100 from Cummins. Also, have your fuel tested.

I disagree on the seafoam it states on the can for gas or diesel engines.I have run it before in my engine with a cetene booster(stanadyne Pf or primrose 405-409 additives) and it runs fine.coobie

Yep, It says it can be used in both gas and diesel. I've used it in my gas, intake, and oil to clean my truck out. The only thing it will do is foul your plugs, and obviously that's something you guys with the oil burners don't have to worry about.
