I am renting a starcraft 24' RBH travel trailer for memorial day weekend. I am towing it 240 miles one way on flat land through the middle of texas. My friend went and reserved it at the RV rental place so I havent seen it. I drive a 2005 crew cab F150 with four wheel drive and the 5.4 V8 motor. My truck is pre wired for the electric brakes but I do not have a brake controller. I am going to go to the rental place and see what this trailer has equiped on it as far as surge or electric brakes. If it has electric brakes should I install a brake controller?

Here is the picture of the trailer....

Yes, more than likely it will have electric brakes so use a brake controller and also use a weight distributing hitch with some form of sway control too...

I have a Starcraft Star Stream 24QB. I am sure the trailer will have electric brakes. The rental place may supply a brake controller. In almost all if not all states it would be required to be legal. Your liability would be out-of-site without it. In an acident, the other party would own the rental place, you and anything you own!

You should not have any problem towing the trailer. For your limited tow and your tow vehicle, I would not bother with a weight distribution hitch. An anti-sway bar would also be a good idea to have installed. Should be around $100 dollars. Again the rental place may supply.

I have never rented one, so it would only be a guess, but I would think it could be rented at the same time and may be required...
I doubt the rental company would accept the responsibility of sending you down the road without the required equipment...
by all means go there and discuss all of this with them before making the rental...

I would contact the rental place to see if they have rental equipment available. You will need to have a weight distributing hitch, sway control and a brake controller, even though you are only travelling a short distance you can encounter a variety of scenarios that will make you glad you have the proper equipment, and it will make the trip safe and more enjoyable. If you had to go out and buy the required equipment you are probably looking at $500 to $600 dollars minimum.

You will more than likely need a brake controller and a Weight Distributing Hitch. Have fun on Memorial Day! I CANNOT wait!

hey dave, all are correct. you need a brake control. I would think the rental place would have all this stuff, especially if you aren't pulling normally? are you the same dave that used to frequent the f150 site? sure got boring there. always got a laugh at your fun times. have a safe trip! camping can be alot of fun....

Yep thats me. I am still on there under a different name. My name was JimBeam for a while then that name got banned. Now I have a new name on there. The mods hate me there for some reason and I didn't even do anything. Oh well. I sent the rental guy an email and we will see what happens. I am going to go ahead and buy a electronic brake controller. The WD hitches are pretty pricey from what I have seen. Hopefully the guy has some for rent at his shop.
