Going from Waterton Lakes to Calgary this Summer. Triple A suggests Rt 6 to Rt 3 to Rt 2 north. Rt 22 seems a little more direct. Anyone care to compare these two options? Thanks.

Hwy 22 would be more direct, but likely not any faster. If you prefer seeing more rural scenery and avoiding traffic, it would be the better choice.
Hwy 22 north of Calgary is also a pleasant drive, as is Hwy 11 from Rocky Mtn House to Banff National Park.
Although we like those roads more than the freeways. When crossing Sask & Manitoba we took Hwy 13 rather than Hwy 1.

Highway 22 offers you a bypass around city unless you like freeway racing! Forgot to mention, Highway 22 is known as "Cowboy Trail" as it skirts along the eastern border of ranching country.

Coming up from Sweetgrass, is it worth it to catch 22 West of Fort MacLeod? We will be on a fast, two day crosscountry from Colorado to Kananaskis country and it will be a spot decision based on how much ground we cover. I like the idea of being more rural but am limited by our timeline. If the scenery is that much better I'd like to do it if we have the time.

Are you in a hurry? 22 is a nicer road , but is 2 lane - #2 is a 4 lane h/way, with pretty much the same west view, but further away!! I take 22 going to SE BC from Calgary, but wouldn't go to Waterton that way.

Thats a tricky one. Depends on where you are going into K ctry. But I'd be tempted to take 22 in your case and go in on 541 to 40 and up to the lakes. Thats a nice drive.
Have fun,

Alan,
If you are in a time crunch I would head up # 2 to DeWinton, keep on the left of the split ( I think they call it 2A now ... it's been a while since I lived there) and take 22X which heads west to Bragg Creek to join 22 north back to highway 1 west. This route will get you around the city and you will avoid all it's inherent traffic problems.
With that being said, if you are headed for Peter Lougheed PP then take 22 north and 541/40 west. If you are headed for Bow Valley PP then take my first suggestion.
I hope that this helps. If you need any more info please feel free to PM me. The area you will be visiting was my backyard for many many years.
Have a safe and enjoyable trip.

Bow Valley CG is where we are headed. Aren't there snow issues with 40? It isn't kept open all year is it? We will be arriving mid June.

Higway 40 is open all the way through , June 15 to December 1. The rest of the year you can access Peter Lougheed PP from the north and then turn around and back tack to highway 1 or you can access McLean Creek from the south via 541 and bactrack to Longview. The road is closed, not so much for the snow but rather because it is the wintering grounds for the elk and spring time of course sees many calves.

So the 15th is a hard number, not based on clearing the road etc? We would be coming through a day or two before that.
