Weather alert radio and well built block bathrooms. I have seen first hand what tornados and hurricanes can do, and not just to RV's! Not a pretty sight for sure.
Besides a direct hit from a tornado and the toilet comes in handy...

In North Carolina where we are at a campground for the summer, a siren sounds and they send a shuttle and security around to pick campers that want to go to shelter. We have gone twice so far just for a few minutes each time. Better safe than sorry.

Hey, 2 mos ago we rode out the bad weather in Georgia as there was NO PLACE to go. Well the Dodge CTD suffered $7000 in damage from super size hail. I will have to give Progressive Direct Kudos'. They completely repaired the truck. New hood, fenders, roof and repaired all the rear fender dings and painted the red truck.

Today I'm sitting here watching the snow flakes that occasionally come down with the rain. COLD. New state. New campground. Still no place to go if severe weather comes along. I guess it's part of the overall fun and ambience of full-timing.

Hey, if it makes people feel safe to hide in the bathroom I guess they should. But a little dose of reality might be in order so you don't feel bad about not having an unsafe shelter to hide in.

Here's how to build a "tornado/hurricane" proof room/building. You'll notice it has a concrete ROOF - I've yet to see a CG restroom with a concrete roof. Also notice that the walls and the concrete roof need to be tied to the slab and each other AND be solid concrete not just block walls. A tornado picks things up. It's low pressure (near vacuum at the core) causes things to litterally explode when it passes over. So the roof of the CG bathroom will instantly depart in a direct hit and a tree or 4x4 will come right through those hollow concrete block walls.

Just something to think about.

As to hurricanes, we rode out a couple of them in Palm Bay, Fl. - roof of the house was damaged, couple trees came down, shed out back disappeared, etc. - damage to RV a small scratch on the back where the shed hit it on it's way off the property. Power went out as soon as the wind started - generator never flickered. DW needs oxygen, machine to make oxygen requires electricity - RV is source of electricity - therefore, best place to be.

Anyone that has answered this post, do any of you have pets? What would you/do you do for them when you have to go to the shelter?

Regarding pets...I know that the times we have sheltered in buildings, no pets were allowed. I guess you would leave them in the rig and hope for the best.....

This is probably going to get me yelled at, but it's how I feel on this topic. If you choose to have a pet then you have accepted responsibility for his care and well being. If you're not willing to stay with them and protect them then don't take on the responsibility to start with.JMHO

Had an episode with a tornado in Galena, IL about 10-115 years ago. Sirens were going off and TV from Iowa showed the path and times, we had about 5-10 minutes warning. Everyone gathered their pets - we had 2 dogs and everyone went to the cinderblock bath house. All pets and people did well together for about 20 minutes. Fortunately, the twister hopped over the Mississippi river and hit about 10 miles south of us.

The hail on the aluminum roof of the Class C (before the warnings) had a profound lasting effect on one of our dogs (and me too )
