Greetings all,

What are some of the basic items that will need to be purchased when you get a new 5th wheel? My family and I are getting back into camping and I was wondering what items I will need to purchase after I get my 5th wheel. I thinking about adapters for the electric 50 amps to 30 amps, water hose, chemicals for black tank, rug for outside, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You’re going to need a lot of stuff, but the first thing you'll need is a 5er hitch. The type of hitch will depend on the truck you'll be towing with. If it's a short bed, you'll probably want to get a slider hitch.

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that the deal I'm working includes a pullrite super glide slider hitch and brake controller.

Here are a few of the basic things you’ll need.
1. Two 25 ft. white, fresh water hoses
2. Water pressure regulator
3. Two between-the-tires wheel chocks
4. Boards or plastic blocks for side-to-side leveling
5. Jack pads to prevent sinking
6. Lug wrench (usually not included)
7. Electrical adapters (depends on how many amps your 5er has)
8. Sewer hoses and adapters

Thanks Cactus-John,

Why do you suggest two 25 foot hoses and not just get one 50 foot water hose? Also, what type of sewer hoses and adapters would you suggest? What would the sizes and length for the boards or plastic blocks? Thanks

I would suggest that you buy a moderate grade of sewer hose to begin with. They last about as long as the top of the line hoses.

For me I have one leveling board that is long enough for the two tandem wheels to sit on. Then I have four boards that just accommodate one wheel. I have put 45° angles on each end of all the boards. With this set of boards I can get the fiver wheel two boards high by using the long board as a base and the single boards in various manners as I back up or go forward onto the next level of boards. I had to make sure that the single boards would fit in the space between the tandem wheels so I could install them before driving onto them. Clear as mud huh.. grin.

Usually, you will only need one hose, and a 25-footer is easier to deal with than a 50-footer. Also, if something happens to one of the hoses, such as freezing, you’ll have a spare. Just make sure the hose(s) are specially made for drinking water, so they don’t impart a taste.

I use the thicker (15 mils), Camco heavy duty hoses that are available at Wally World. For hose fittings, I use Valterra Sewer Hose Fittings. They connect the hoses without the need for clamps. To prevent the hose from flying out of the campground's sewer hole, I use the Hose Buddy.

I don’t use boards for leveling. I use Lynx Levelers, which are very light and versatile. They are also available at Super Wally Worlds.

I also use the Lynx levelers and think they are great. One thing just to save on tools if you don't already have a good set, is instead of a dedicated lug wrench for the trailer, just go ahead and get a torque wrench and, depending on your rim width, a 6 inch extension. Trailer rims need to be torqued, so might as well use the torque wrench instead of buying both.
