for US citizens, traveling in RV during July 2008, will we require passport or would birth certificate+drv lic will be enough?

NO!
No passport is needed tho enter Canada. The only reason you need a passport is if you fly back into the US. Just proof of citizenship , as in birth certificate and picture id to reenter the US.

To enter the USA from Canada or Mexico by car/rv you need to prove your identification with a gov't issue picture ID (drivers license) and citizenship (birth certificate will work). A passport, of course, includes both.

There is still time to just get a passport and have no worries at the border coming or going.

We are headed up in June. We got passports for the whole family (6). We did not request rush processing and we had the passports back within 10 days. We also requested the passport ID cards but have yet to receive those (now over one month).

Our recommendation is to get your passports. It makes traveling much easier. We use ours when we fly in the U.S. It just seems to us the line moves so much faster when people present their passport.

I'm seconding/thirding the 'get a passport'----.unless, you expect this to be the only trip to Canada. But, if you expect to travel in the future, it is possible passports will be required and even though they are expensive, it does make the crossing easier as others have pointed out.

Passports are not required yet, but it makes life way easier.
