Hey guys-
By suggestion of members here, our long trip this year will be to the Mt Rushmore area. I'm just wondering if there are any attractions/places to go that I need to make reservations for. I generally like to wait to see what weather is like, but I know some things can get nuts on the big camping holidays.
Thanks!

We stayed in Custer at a real neat small campground right down town. If you go there don't miss the loop through Custer state park early in the morning when all the critters are out feeding. However, beware of the Buffalo traffic jams.

YES you need reservations for 4th of July!! The Black Hills is a very popular tourist destination, especially judging from all the inquiries on this forum.
Check rvparkreviews.com for some recommended CGs. Some may possibly be already sold out for the 4th. Expect many CGs to require a minimum stay of several nights; that's typical for holidays.

I have been there twice in the past 8 years and only made reservations for the campground. They say that some of the dinner theaters, train rides and horse rides require reservations during peak seasons but I would bet you should be okay. Good luck and have fun. There is just soooo much to see in that area. I need to go back again just to finish what I started.

I was in the area for the Fourth last year. Make reservations for your cg NOW. As stated before some plaes like the train ride (which we liked) will book early and you'll probably have to stand in a few lines. Make sure you do the fireworks at Rushmore. Be prepared to leave in plenty of time for that and walk a good bit.

We will be there for the 4th. Didn't make any reservations for anything yet except for the campground. Some of the attractions might not open until Memorial Day. So might look into some reservations for Wind Cave Tours, etc after Memorial Day. See you there and have a great trip!!

Don't know what your religious background is like, but there is a very well done Passion Play outdoor theatre up in Spearfish. Worth seeing for Christians and non-Christians alike.

We were there last year over the 4th and our campground (A Forest Service campground) was full. Right after the 4th there were many openings. I'd get reservations for your CG but not worry about the attractions.

Jerry, as far as campground is concerned you should make your reservations now. We stayed at both the KOA in Custer and the Hill City KOA. I would not recommend the Custer KOA, however, I would highly recommend the Hill City KOA. It was clean and the staff was very friendly. We were there over a weekend a couple of years ago and one night they had a dutch oven dinner catered in and live music. It was a very nice experience.
As far as other attractions I would recommend a drive through Custer State Park in the evening and check out all of the animals that come out. Also, a short drive away is the Bear World and Reptile Gardens that are quite popular and neat to see. Enjoy, Mike.
