I have an 06 Dodge 2500 and am trying to find any wire that goes to the gauges on the dash. I am wiring my on board compressor and need an illumination wire source. I would like to use a gauge wire so it will dim with the others. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you know of the wires color and approximate location that would be great.

Trace it either from the fuse panel or from the dash panel. Probly easier to find it on the fuse panel. You need to locate the fuse that supplies the instrument panel light circuit and find the terminal on the connector associated with that fuse.

If all you are looking for is gauge illumination, you might check out your ashtray light. On my fords it is pretty easy to get to, and has always been viable for a gauge light. Might be easier than taking the dash apart.

Your owners manual should have a wiring diagram, which might help. They often don't tell wire color.
Owners manuals are a free download from the Dodge site. You didn't say if yours was gas or diesel, and those appear to have separate manuals.
Dodge owners site
I found a site that sells wiring diagrams which have wire colors. Here is a sample, not for your Dodge. I know nothing about this company. Here is a link to their site. They say $5.99 and up.
Good luck!

The ash tray light worked for me. Just spent a long time in hooking up my HID lights, the way my '01 switches the head lights threw me for awhile. It also helps alot when the relay you buy isn't a dud. LOL

Go here - Dodge Body Builder or you can go to - Geno's Garage and order the full service manual for you truck on cd for about $100 bucks. The service manual is priceless if you do some of your own wrenching, and a small investment for an expensive truck.

You can use one of the wires off the headlight switch for this also, as thats what alot of the guys use for after market performance gauges. I believe the wire is orange with a black tracer. You need to be careful with the newer(06 and later)Dodges when adding electrical accessories, as everything goes through the computer to monitor the amp draw on the circuits. Overload the circuit and you'll need to have it reset by the dealer. Use relays to power anything that has any kind of load to it. You'll be fine with just the lights for your gauge.

I got it. Searched out a gauge install on Geno's Garage. Yes the wire was orange with a black stripe and hooking it to the light switch was the easiest. It works great.
