I know many happy RVers that don't fix things themselves, rather rely on professionals or their camping friends. I know others that do everthing themselves, and some that DIY then hire the pro to fix what they did.
You do have to be competent enough at maintenance tasks to deal with hooking up power cords and hoses, and emptying waste tanks. If you have a travel trailer or other towable, there are more mechanical tasks, higher risk and greater complexity, associated with hooking up to tow, unhooking to camp, securing and leveling the camper at the campsite.
There are people who function so little at this level that they should not RV, or tent camp, or go boating, or even go fishing, for that matter. It's not just in the movies, I have some camping friends I watch carefully during setup to make sure they don't lose their trailer down the hill and over the bluff, again.
You have to figure out where you fit in this, and how valid might be your wife's assessment.
