What is the procedure for filling the propane tank?? Could I expect that most propane fill stations could do this? I wanted to get some advice/knowledge before I get the tank filled (first time getting the tank filled, approx. 1/3 full now).
Thanks!!

You pull up to the filling area, open up your little door, (where propane tank is), they connect the hose, they fill it, you pay, you're off.

Did I mention NO SMOKING?

And don't forget to turn off all flamed based propane appliances. Even though the main is shut off, there is still gas in the lines inside the coach.

I believe the question was do you have to go to a special LP station or can they be filled by any location that fills LP tanks? I have the same ?

Just a thought. Ask how they determine how much to charge you.
Most often we have been metered and charged by the gallon amount that was pumped
BUT:
We have also been charged by the tank size as if the tank were completely empty.. so, say we have a 30 gallon tank and only had 5 gallons pumped in, they still charged us for 30 gallons!

There was some small print at the station that we didn't read. Live and learn. I suspect that this "rip off" practice is not common, but ask up front anyway.

(has anyone else come across this practice for selling propane?)

I believe I read that the tank should not be filled greater than 80% to allow for expansion. It looks like there is a level gauge installed on the side of the tank that will leak LP as it reaches that level. Is that the 80% fill mark?? I want to be informed before I let someone start filling the tank.

Modern propane tanks have an OPD (overfill protection device) built in. This prevents them being filled past 81% capacity. The attendant filling the propane tanks knows what to do and how to fill it. Don't make a big deal out of this, it's a no brainer. If you're filling the non-removable tank on your motorhome, the only consideration is choosing a location where you can pull up next to the propane filling station.

Almost any location that fills propane tanks should be able to do it. If they are a small place (like a pool store) that only does BBQ tanks, you may have issues. But larger dealers should be able to handle it.

So far, I've only run into this sales models at the small places that fill BBQ tanks. I've not seen it yet while filing the MH tank. But I do ask!
