We are going to travel in Canada this Summer, and have been told that it is illlegal to travel with the propane tank on. Does anyone know if this is true or just an urban legend? Don't want the Mounties to chase me down.

We've made several trips to Canada with our camper recently. This is the first I've heard any mention of this. Border guards never questioned our tanks status, nor anyone else while we were in Canada. We travel with our tanks on and were never confronted at any point in time.

I suppose the previous post from someone from Toronto would be definitive.

A friend of my cousin's friend's uncle told me he knew someone who told him he heard from his brother-in law's neighbor's sister that propane left on while traveling in Canada would result in nothing.

Seriously, do you really think the law enforcement officials in Canada will stop you to check if your propane is on?

I have traveled extensively in Canada, and except for the metric system of weights and measures and the overly friendly and helpful Canadians as compared to us in the Sates, you will find no difference between the two countries.

There are Certain Places , Not Just in Canada that have rules regarding Propane!
Under the Canada Shipping Act Ferries and Other Vessels Prohibit the use of Propane while aboard! Some Tunnels have Restrictions and also Some Underground Parking structures!

To the Best of My knowledge there are No General Prohibitions concerning Propane in fact there are Propane and Natural Gas powered vehicles in Use Everywhere!

Thanks to all for the info, makes life a bit easier.
My info came from a fellow fulltimer at a campground in Arizona. He told me that when he was entering B.C. at Blaine, WA. the Canadian customs person entered his 5r and turned on his stove. When it lit he was given a ticket and told he couldn,t travel with his tanks on. Either he or I must have been from another planet, he obviously was not Canadian, eh.
Thanks again for the good info.

We travel the border all the time at several crossing points and we leave the fridge on; it has never been an issue, and it certainly is not an issue traveling in Canada with propane on.

Every province would have different laws but in Ontario I think you're OK. I searched the highway traffic act and other law and could not find anything except two exerpts below. You're propane needs to be shut off when you gas up. Ontario law is available online.

http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/index.html

(3) No person shall connect, or permit to be connected, a gasoline or propane fuelling nozzle to the fuel fill point of a vehicle equipped with a propane appliance unless the supply of propane to the main burners and pilot burners of the appliance is shut off. O. Reg. 211/01, s. 25 (3).

(4) An operator of a vehicle with a propane appliance installed on it shall shut off, or cause to be shut off, the supply of propane to the main burner and pilot burner of the appliance before a gasoline or propane fuelling nozzle is connected by anyone to the fuel fill point of the vehicle. O. Reg. 211/01, s. 25 (4)
