we route you taking. in medesto there is the hersey factory you can visit and fresh candy at the end of the tour. also the winchester castle is i think up north some where.you also check out mount st. helen in washington that was erreey when I seen it.
Depends on the route and what you like to do -- the Sierras and the Sequoias are great, Yosemite is great but crowded, the coastal redwoods are amazing. Also depends on how much time you have. And don't miss the beaches in northern San Diego county, if you are here in Aug or Sept.
I'm a native San Diegan, lifelong camper, older than dirt, and I STILL never run out of places to visit in this great state. Here is our official state tourism site. Maybe it can give you a few ideas.
The advice we can all give here will depend upon what time of year you are going, how long you have to make the trip, whether you want to do old-time camping or resort-type.
Some of my Don't Miss ideas any time of year:
- the redwoods, both giant sequoias and coast type
- at least a few of the missions
- Golden Gate Bridge
- Point Lobos State Reserve
- Yosemite Valley!!!
Basically, think about what you can find in California that isn't anywhere else.

If taking route 101/1, lots to see. Monterey Bay aquarium, San Simeon, Hearst Castle has a great tour, Carmel, and dont forget San Francisco while your visiting Alcatraz. Lots to see and do there!
If you have time while there, drive across to Yosemite..great National Park!
In SFO,
Book your Alcatraz trip now or you might not get on the boat.
Pier39/fisherman's wharf.
Take one of those double decker bus tours.
When you leave, park on the north end of the Golden gate bridge at the vista point; if you find plenty of parking, take a short walk onto the bridge.
Muir woods is just north of the Golden gate, toad road, don't take the rig. Coastal redwoods. That way you don't have to go into the north redwoods.

A nice SP to stay at is Morro Bay, just south of the Hearst Castle. Very clean and easy to maneuver in. Just north of Hearst Castle on Highway 1 is the viewing area for elephant seals, they are several hundred lying all around on the beach just below the parking spot. Take your camera, and try to find one of the hosts who are wearing blue jackets, they will explain what's going on and answer questions about the elephant seals.
