I know the Verizon use in Canada is more costly because it is out of the country but how about Alaska? Will my cell phone with nationwide coverage cost more to use? Thanks

While Verizon doesn't directly serve Alaska, they do have roaming agreements enabling service up here. As far as cost, your best bet would be to contact Verizon directly and discuss your plan's options.

In general, roaming in Alaska is considered the same as off-network roaming in the rest of the country, when it comes to billing policies.

When we made our last trip to Ak in 2005 we switched to Verizon's North American Plan which gave us unlimited use in Canada and Alaska as long as we stayed within our plan's number of minutes. Using the phone in Canada and Ak was no different than using it here in East Texas.

Go to a local Verizon store and talk to them about what you need to do before you leave on your trip.

A few months ago, we went in to a Verizon store and were told there was NO calling plan we could use for Canada. After reading posts about the North American Plan, dh called Verizon and asked for it. He was told the plan is now called Nationwide Plus. The cost will be $89.99 plus tax for both of our phones. Good deal!

We moved up here a year ago and brought our Verizon phones with us -- we have a family plan with kids in the L48. We have found no reason to switch. The phones work fine, there are no extra charges and we get all the bennies such as free nationwide calling, verizon to verizon is free and the rest. There are dead spots - Alaska IS a big state, afterall! - but no worse than other providers up here. Calling in Canada will be higher so you might want to check with verizon about that.

I have had Verizon for years and have spent the last 8 summers in or thru Canada. I have the national wide (not sure of exact name) family plan where I can call to/from anywhere in the US including Alaska and Hawaii. With my plan (family?) I can not add Canada for $10/mo so I avoid using phone there as much as possible. Coverage in Alaska is spotty outside the bigger cities but I can ususally get a signal along the coast. In Skagway for example we had to drive to the town overlook for a Verizon signal.

P.S. I have a tri-mode phone which allows me to pick up analog signals. This really helps in the boonies.

I think you should have said that there are spots where a cell phone will work The dead spots out number the coverage 20x.

In 2007 our Verizon family plan worked in every Alaska town of any size and incured no roaming fees at all. We did not use the phone while in Canada.

We are currently in Prince Rupert, BC waiting to get on the ferry to Ketchikan and points northwest. Before we entered Canada with our Verizon phones, we added Canada to our calling plan. It increased the monthly amount by $20US. We will turn it off after we get to Ketchikan and expect to continue to use our phones in Alaska. While driving in Canada we have had good service while in the cities except for Prince Rupert. We have absolutely no service here. I know there is cell phone service in town but I guess Verizon hasn't signed an agreement with the local carrier. On the road in Canada the service has been spotty.
