We encountered this for the first time the other day. I think this a policy these companies need to reconsider if their customers (the fuel stations) have to charge $4.00/gal for gas. Rumor now has it that it will be up to $6.00/gal by summer's end. And magically, despite demand for diesel, kerosene, heating oil and other distallates being at a year-long low, the price of that keeps going up to . . . but I digress.

I talked to my Banker about this problem and he said it is the credit card company that sets the limits. The reason is that most card fraud is from credit purchases where you don't have to sign. At the pump I punch the pay inside button. After filling I pay inside with my credit card. I however won't leave my card with the clerk while I fill.

Ok, so why don't the credit card companies simply ask for a PIN or a zip code or ANYTHING at the pump? Doesn't that seem obvious?
And you can simply push pay inside and pump as much fuel as you want? Wow.. talk about risk of drive off!!

They have a $75.00 limit and you can swipe your card a second time if you are not full. How ever you don't get the 10 cent discount on the second transaction. that really sucks!
Same thing with Kroger here. The trick is to scan your club card then hit the "pay inside" button. There is then no limit at the pump and the $.10 discount keeps going. I use that trick each spring when I take my six 5 gallon gas cans down to fill up my "hurricane fuel stash" along with filling up the Expedition. That's going to be an expensive trip later this month.

Just to clarify, it's not the bank that issues the card that sets the limit, it's the company that the station uses that sets the limit.
I've used the same card at many stations. Some have a $75 limit, some have no limit.

I also wondered about this so I asked my banker what the reason was. It is the credit card companys that causes it. The reason being that most theft is caused by people using stolen credit cards where they don't have to sign for the purchase.
