Depending on the station, if its like a Pilot truck stop in Oregon, I tell them cash, fill it, then go inside and pay with the card. Pilot cuts off at $75. It usually takes around $100 to fill.

It's not the station, oil company, nor the credit card issuer that sets the limit--it's the company that processes the credit card transactions. That's why it's so inconsistent.

Are you saying the station can override the card processing company, right on the spot?

The card limit is "pay At the pump". You can go inside and buy as much as you want.

A few years ago we drove cross country (in a car). at the end of the week we had $300 in 'holds' on our debit card. Which wouldn't have been so bad but that was ON TOP OF the fuel costs. Talk about a drain on the checking account! Luckly the bank was able to free up some of them. nothing like that has happen since, must have been a fluke. It wasn't a fluke. Banks often put a "hold" on funds above the amount of gas you pumped if you choose the debit option. Use the credit option to avoid this.

This is the correct answer!
The reason the clerk can over-ride the small dollar cut-offs is at the pump the card is only checked to see if it is a current, active account. If you looked at your account soon after using pay at the pump, you would only see a $1 charge that is updated a few days later for the full amount. That $1 charge only confirms that the account is active, not whether it is over the credit limit as an example. With the clerk, they will process it for the full amount, and if the credit card will not accept that amount, the clerk will ask you for another method of payment. I know, using the card multiple times for one fill up totally defeats the rationale for the dollar amount cut off at pay at the pump. Hey, don't shoot the messenger!

I buy diesel at Safeway where I get a 10 cent per gal, discount if I have bought $50.00 worth at the grocery store. They have a $75.00 limit and you can swipe your card a second time if you are not full. How ever you don't get the 10 cent discount on the second transaction. that really sucks!

i did that swip twice only once to fill my truck on a trip dou to when i made my next stop my card was shut down by the card holder for what they thought was a stolen card because it was swiped twice in 10 min for gas...im glad the card company watches for fraud but it realy caused a problem since i had no cash to fill up..i was able to get it unlocked after calling the visa and waiting 30 min for the computer to update the system for it to work again..so after that i would walk to the cashier and tell them i want to fill up and they turn on the pump..

Thanks for your answer, but this has never made any sense to me. I've emailed Amex to see what they say about it. By the way, who is a credit card processor?
One reason I keep thinking is more reasonable than any other is the station wants you to come in the store rather than stay outside at the pump.
