I would think, since heat rises and most of the "burnable" stuff in the RV is in the living area, that the basement, as far as possible from the fuel tank, would the the most likely place for a fire box to survive a fire. That would also put it in a location where you might be able to get to it if you had to abandon ship.

I'll be putting the originals into a fire box (I suggest this for everyone) and giving them to my son or a dear friend of mine (I'm torn between the thought of them with my son, who lives like he was still in a dorm ...barf ...and my friend, who has 4 kids who *really* get about!)...the one who doesn't get the lock box, will get copies.
I was going to have copies in my rig for me also, but I think Paps idea of notarized copies is a very good idea - I'll carry those then. Though I'll have originals of the things I normally carry with me.
When carrying paperwork either have originals or certified copies made by the officials having jurisdictions over the paperwork, example: Birth certificates having been certified by a NOTARY is worthless in most cases since notaries can not certify copies of documents in most cases. Originals duly certified by the State is the only way most in officialdom will accept Birth Certificates.
Most states do not allow notaries to "Certify" copies of paperwork anymore, the best advice is ORIGINALS with proper certification from the proper recording official, Notary Certifications are looked at with some suspicion.
