I am trying to route from Salt Lake City, UT to southern Oregon coast (gold beach maybe) I see I-80 west to Winnemucca, NV noth on 95, then 140 west to Klamath Falls (this is the road i am wondering about, have 25'C with jeep toad) What is the best route from Kalamath Falls to coast, doesn't have to be Gold Beach just looking for that rugged OR coast (unlike anything in GA) Then any suggestion to cut back across Oregon to Baker City?
The route we took in 2005 back from the coast (Coos Bay) was:
SR 42 east to
I-5 south to Medford, OR
SR-62 north to
SR-140 east to
US-95 south to Winnemucca, NV
I-80 east to Battle Mountain, NV
SR-305 south to Austin, NV
US-50 east to Ely, NV
US-93 south to Panaca, NV
SR-319/56 east to Beryl Junction, UT
SR-18 south to home (Dammeron Valley, UT)
We were hauling a 30 foot 5th wheel and had no problems with road conditions. Unless you have some other reason to be in Salt Lake City, I suggest you avoid it.

I suspect you know, 140 across northern NV and southern OR is a desert, there are few & far between services. There is no cell service or corners for a 7-11, your preparation and attention is needed.
From K. Falls I'd go across to I5 and up to hwy 42 to Bandon or the Coos Bay area. Cape Argo if you're into sightseeing.
To Baker City: I'd go up 101 to hwy 126 and take it all the way to hwy 20, then hwy 20 to Ontario. Again long stretches with no services. Once you leave Bend in Central Oregon, Eastern Oregon in that area has few services. If this isn't what you want, there is I5 -> I205 -> I84.

The route you describe is the route we always take. There are definitely elevation changes that won't be seen in Georgia, but nothing that will give you trouble. Stay on 140 all the way to I-5, then north to either Grant's Pass and 199 to Crescent City or Roseburg and 42/42S to Bandon. I like 199 myself. One narrow spot for about a mile, but a lot to see. Couple of decent RV parks in Winnemucca, Goose Lake State Park just south of Lakeview, several good RV parks around Grants Pass. rvparkreviews.com. Also a couple of good parks in Crescent City and good commercial and state parks can be found all the way up the Oregon coast. Coming back, several choices. There are 3 ways across the mountains (from Salem, Eugene, and Albany)and all are scenic and doable. Then 26/7 OR direct to Baker. Or, you can go north and west on I-84 of course. My choice would be 26, a good, two lane highway..and 7 to Baker is quite scenic. All the highways from the coast to I-5 are doable with your rig so take your choice. Let the forum know if you want more specific info. Make sure you top up in Winnemucca as 140 is barren until Lakeview. I lost oil once on that highway and it was two hours before another car came by..tho that was a number of years ago. Traffic a little more plentiful nowadays.

Here's another recent thread that discusses 140 across Oregon and Nevada. Close to the border it drops down a rim (west bound) that apparently scares some drivers, and delights hang gliders.
The thread that Paul mentions speaks of Doherty Slide at the NV/OR border. Westbound is downhill so shouldn't be a problem. Actually I never found it to be a problem uphill...I don't think it's 9%. Of course, that stretch of 140 can be avoided by taking I-80 all the way Wadsworth and taking NV 447 north to Alturas or to Reno and taking US 395 to Alturas, then 299/139 to Klamath Falls. Longer but pretty easy. I've taken both of these routes and they are fine. Of course, I am assuming we speak of summer travel. Biggest problem I ever had on 140 was the occasional cattle drive that had to be negotiated.
Let me propose a different route. We enjoy taking I-84 because it goes along the Columbia River in Oregon. Then we take I-5 until we reach the cutoff to Florence. In Florence we head south, stopping wherever we like, especially at any of the wonderful state parks. This is a much prettier route than the others that have been described. Longer, but prettier.

Salt lake is ok now, Provo is doing some road work, and there is a little road work being done on your proposed route, but is duable. No problem.

Okay..let's not mention #140 anymore. It is way to precious to let just anyone know about. The Sheldon Wildlife Refuge and the hot springs at the Virgin River turn off ought to be removed from all touristy maps and brochures. Maybe a test to determine the visitors credentials? Mind you, there aren't any services (read cg's with plug in) so that eliminates THAT bunch, and no Wal-Mart, so THOSE folks stay away. Kind of a natural cull, I suppose.
