What type of paint should I use to repaint the areas of the old decals?
The removal methods will work fine on non-coated fiberglass. As to the paint, automobile paint would probably be best for appearance and long life.

I've said it before... but everyone wants to keep using sprays, heat guns and scrapers to remove decals and stripes. If you want a quick, easy and foolproof way to remove stripes and decals, pickup a 3m eraser wheel. It fits on a drill and will completely remove a stripe, decal and the adhesive no matter how long it's been on the RV or what condition the stripes are in.

I have used them to completely remove the stripes and decals from 2 RV's. It's what the paint and body shops use... does the job quick, easy and doesn't damage the paint, fiberglass or metal thats under the stripes. I bought mine at a local auto parts shop for around $25.

Give it a try and you'll never use any other method again.

I Painted over a 3" stripe on mine 3 years ago it still looks good with no peeling or flaking. I cleaned the area with prep solvent I got from a parts store and masked it off. I can't remember for sure but I think I put a coat of primer on it and then 3 coats of acrylic enamel. If you look closely you can see some old cracks in the old stripes but it is not a glaring defect, sure looks better than the old cracked and faded stripe did and has a nice shine. I wondered if it would hold up but so far I am very happy with it. My stripes were not peeling just faded and starting to crack. I have some more that are starting to look old and am planning to do the same thing to them.
Good Luck on your project!
Ed

What will Goo-Gone do to the fiberglass if you try to use it to remove any excess adhesive?

Sorry for non-clickable link.

There's another 3m eraser disc link in my reply as well.

I sorta kinda got into some of the issues discussed above. Recently downsized from a DP to a little 23 foot Coach House Class C, B plus, or whatever you choose to call it. Anyhow, most of the decals and some of the striping were in pretty bad shape. Fading, peeling etc. Additionally, the fiberglass gelcoat had gotten to the point where it just wouldn't respond to cleaning, waxing, buffing and so on.

So I ended up removing a lot of decals, and a fair amount of striping. It had too many "swirly" decals to suit my conservative nature, so I opted to leave some of them off, but to add some new striping over and above the stripes I was already replacing.

First however, I had to deal with the fiberglass. After considerable research, I decided to go with a product called PoliGlow. Long story short, it worked very well and has restored the gelcoat shine. Took me weeks instead of hours as claimed in the ads tho. Just a lot of work AND learning.

Finished it off with some 3M striping (bring money - 50 bucks a roll BUT a superior product).

So after a reasonably modest investment in money, and a big investment in time, I think it looks pretty nice. It is a "cleaner" look without the extra decals - - I coulda bought new factory decals, but they were about a 1000 bucks - - so I passed on that.

Anyone curious about the results can PM me for pictures if interested.

The reason for spelling is so that all of the words don't look the same.
