has anyone seen or done this???....or did i just invent the wheel??...ok i've seen spare tires on the rear bumper...and i've seen them on the bottom of the fifth wheel between front jacks..and i've seen..peaple remove it off the back bumper to make room for a rack...so they throw it in the bed of the truck>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So this is my idea...i was looking under my TV...and in the rear my spare is under my bed like all TV...on a winch cable...16" wheel and tire...the cable is very long...long enuff to reach the ground....couldn't I/WE stack two tires together...truck and trailer tire...lower the cable to the ground...and hook onto the lower wheel...and then crank both spares up under the TV at the same time???the first tire you can never see...unless you climb under the truck...the secound tire will only stick down anothe 7 inches...is this a great idea or what??

I'll be watching this thread. My Cougar has the extendable rear bumper. The spare was on it, but carrying bicycles I figured it to be to much weight. So I put my spare in front of the fifth wheel hitch between it and the tool box.

I have a rear storage, that is where the spare was mounted. It was taking up to much room, so I bought a foldable rear bumper mount. So far, works for me.
Sounds like you have a pretty good idea. Like to know how it works out.

Hmmm, just another 7".... I'd be concerned about hitting the ground going over dips, etc, and if the cable is actually strong enough for 2. I carry the spare rib in the truck between the hitch and the tailgate as it's too heavy for the bumper.

I would be worried about the set up not being strong enought to carry two, from time to time you here of them haveing the cable break with just one tire under there,i have seen a mod made of steel where the tires were between the frame rails and slid in from the rear and steel straps and frame work held them up so they would not fall out and a bar across the back to keep them in that could be locked so they could not be stolen and it worked ,kind of like the tire carriers on commerical trailers.

This is a great idea. But, I would just be very careful of the strength of the whole mechanism. Not only the cable. If anything (Ratchet, pulleys, brackets, etc.) in the mechanism fails, you could drop both tires. You can likely get a feel for the strain you put on the mechanism, when you try to lift the two tires, with the little hand crank. It would be a lot of weight. Might advise you try to add on a 'fail safe' strap of some sort, just in case.

If something fails and both tires drop on the road, they'll bounce around. And could cause major damage to the truck, and/or the trailer. Not to mention the safety and welfare of anybody on the road. Including you and your family.

To me it is not worth the risk. Especially when you are using the spare tire lifting equipment, in a manner that it was not designed.

I made new brackets to mount the spare so it effectively sits on top of the rear bumper instead of the mount that hangs it way out to the rear.

My GMC truck has the spare tire mounted under the bed using a cable/winch system to lower it to the ground. (in fact, my wife's Chrysler Pacifica has the same sort of system). I've been meaning to go to a junkyard and take the setup off of a junked car, and then mount it under my camper in a place where there is some spare room.

I have a cinch cable lock made by master (like a bike cable lock) that I cinch around my spare plus a bar under the spare. If you have one of those aound both it might help with the weight...
