I removed my spare tire and carrier from the back bumper and placed the spare tire in one of the under floor compartments in the forward part of the basement. I sometimes forget it is there. That way, it is out of the elements and prying eyes.
For me, NO bikes or other items on the back bumper. I have read to many posts where they have twisted the bumper and even fallen off. I was behind (for a VERY short time!) a fiver 2 weeks ago and he had a bumper mount bike rack. All I can say is SCARY! they were bouncing all over the place. PCM

everyones safty is a consern of mine also...i was thinking that the factory set-up...for the one wheel...is built to carry 5 wheels...the big car makers would never install something that was built to just bareley hold the weight of one tire ??...the assemble would easy lift 150lbs...so the engeniers know that one wheel is just fine so i'm thinking one more tire and a alloy wheel would be fine...and i will look under there to see if i could find something solid to have a cable lock or chain go from the the truck and through both wheels and to the truck again...so if the cable did brake?..it's not going anywhere

OK...update!!....well i just went out and try'ed it....the first thing i noticed that my truck wheel hangs down lower than i first saw...i thought there was a ton of room below it...so i lowered my stock wheel for my truck and slid a spare tire on top of my truck wheel...i put the cable through the top wheel and hooked it to the lower wheel...and cranked the cable back up...it raised both very easy...but they just dont go up high enuff...you can deffenitly see it hanging there...and it is only about a foot off the ground...about even with the bottom of my 3rd member...so long story short...it won't work..not enuff ground clearance...so sorry for the grief that i have caused to anyone...i really thought i had something

My GMC truck has the spare tire mounted under the bed using a cable/winch system to lower it to the ground. (in fact, my wife's Chrysler Pacifica has the same sort of system). I've been meaning to go to a junkyard and take the setup off of a junked car, and then mount it under my camper in a place where there is some spare room.

This is exactly what I did the winch off a Explorer cost $15 plus the $2.00 entrance fee. The steel cost another $14. So for just over $30 I have a winch mount under the 5er for the spare. It doesn't even come down as far as the rear jacks so I'm sure it won't be hitting the ground.

On gooseneck horse and equipment trailers, I see the spare tires mounted vertically to the lower front wall of the trailer, between the landing gear on dual-leg trailers, or off to one side on peg-legs. Maybe one might fit there on the fifth wheeler too?

Another idea is mount the tire carrier to the top of the pin box, holding the tire vertically against the upper front of the trailer.

I think a truck without a rear gas tanks could probly carry 2 tires under the bed. My truck has the rear gas tank and I modified the tire carrier to hold the 12.5" wide spare tire and it hangs down about as much as I care to have it hanging down. No room for two there.

I got a spare tire winch at a junkyard and built an angle iron mount under my 5er to carry the spare. Craig

Our trailer came with a place under the 5er to lift the spare up tight to the frame and out of sight.

We have a pass thru in the back of our 5th wheel. It is stored in the middle since I can normally reach that area anyway.

I'll be watching this thread. My Cougar has the extendable rear bumper. The spare was on it, but carrying bicycles I figured it to be to much weight. So I put my spare in front of the fifth wheel hitch between it and the tool box.

I also have a Cougar with the extendable bumper. I was told by the dealer that carrying anything with the bumper in the extended position was not good, but I am going to investigate carrying two spares with the bumper fully retracted. We don't carry bicycles, so I don't think it will hurt anything...but I'm going to check with the dealer nonetheless.
