1.we had to use the private restrooms at the campground
2. I did not have to dump the black water until we left.
3. I felt silly walking a regular tote around to dump the water out into another camp’s sewer connection.
4. I made a promise to my wife that we are only going to camp at sites that have sewer, electric and water.
5.Both my black and gray tanks both hold 35 galloons each, so I was opting to purchase at least a 30-gallon model.
1. Why?
2. If (1) is true, where did any black water come from?
3. I'd feel silly only if the site was occupied, or if you were told not to do that, or there was a dump station
4. What's her problem with you doing the manly water chores?
5. Don't try to empty the entire tank in one session. 30 gallons of water is VERY heavy. I have a 5- and 10-gallon tote. That's heavy enough. Making more than one trip is allowed, and desireable actually. Just keep up with it every day.
And I never understand the comments about not putting black water in a tote. That's what they're made for.
We have a 16 gallon 4-wheeler that I only put gray water in. It can sometimes be a messy job, and since it weighs nearly 130lbs I don't want to take the chance that it rolls over on me and spills black water all over the road (I use my TV to bring it to the dump station.)
My Wife and I have camped as many as 9 days in a row and haven't come close to filling the black tank. We also take showers in the public showers because I don't feel like emptying my gray water tank ever day while I'm on vacation. Besides, it gives me an excuse to walk somewhere! Without taking showers in the camper we can usually go about 4 or 5 days before the gray water is filled.
I agree with some others, not requiring a sewer hookup gives you so many more choices, particularly beautiful state parks.
I have an 11 Gallon tote! I use it for grey and black water! I opted for this tote because of size to store it and more importantly, I can lift it into the back of my truck. Algonquin Provincial Park's sanitary station is probably about 5 miles or so (from where we normally camp at Mew Lake) down the main highway that cuts through the park, so towing a tote is not an option when camping there!
Note: if anyone fills their tote and doesn't empty it right away, be sure to leave it vented to release the gases!
Mark.
BTW, Peter (nithriver), I will be at Mew Lake for the last 9 days of September ! !

Where do you guys stow your tanks, en-route? I've been stumbling over this one. I would only use mine (18 gal. Smart-Tote) for grey water. BUT...I've not used it yet, as I don't want to bring it inside the TT. I'm thinking about some sort of mod, for a bracket underneath. Until then, it is staying at home.

I'm amazed at how long it takes some of you to fill your tanks. Our family of four will usually fill our gray water in 24-36 hours.
I got a Thetford 27 gallon from CW this year found here, and this weekend used to dump a few gallons of black and then topped it off with gray. It worked well and I like the way the hose tilts from the fill position to the dump position.
I throw the tank in the bed of the truck while en route.

We have a 32 gal Tote-n-Stor & I wouldn't camp without it. We use it for both gray & black water. I don't understand why you wouldn't put black water in the tote. We fill our gray tank frequently. There are 6 of us & the reason I bought a trailer with a bathroom was so that I would never, ever have to go into a campground shower with my 4 kids. We can generally go all day with handwashing & dishwashing (extra dishwater goes down the toilet) all take showers & that will fill our gray tank. Then my dh will dump into the tote. It doesn't take long & makes our camping experience so much better. We love state parks & have never stayed anywhere that had sewer hook-ups. Our tote has a bracket so he can tow it to the dump station. We have been using it for 5 years & it has never tipped over while being towed. When it is full it is super heavy & you do have to go pretty slow. When we travel, we tie ours to the front of the camper--wedged in between the front & the gas tank cover. I definitely would not want it inside the camper. The first trip we ever made we didn't have a tote & ended up filling our tanks & having to pull up stakes & take the camper to dump. I bought the tote before our 2nd trip.
