The train ride is really worth doing. As noted, it does not follow the road. You will get views of the Animas River Gorge that you can't get without hiking into the mountains. Just make sure you are on the gorge side one way or the other (right side going up, left side going down).

If you drive, go further north to Ouray, CO. It's called the "Little Switzerland" of the the U.S.

You should take your car then decide how many other ways and times you can see the area as it will change every time.

Follow 4runnerguys advice and go up the dirt road to Animas you will not be disapointed.

IMHO this is an area that is as good as it gets.
